Got this today at Amoskeag at a good price. Matched phosphate full Kriegsmodell bnz45 t-block - the last block in production before Steyr was captured. More to follow...

OK, we have a late late war bnz45, or Steyr, K98k. Full Kriegsmodell and phosphate finish. Parts are unnumbered save barrel and bolt components. Butt plate is not drilled for the take-down hole that is present in the stock. The stock is dated, I think, 16.2.45, which translates to April 9, 1945 (Julien calendar, 16th week, 2nd day). Steyr continued production right up until the war ended. About 32,000 K98s were produced in 1945, with the t-block being the final and last partial block of about 6,500 rifles. Highest known final proof is 5511, although lower numbers exist lacking the final proof but with the stock proofed or the bolt not proofed. Get 'em out the door - sloppy welds, and rough parts - see the bolt shroud and the bolt knob. Band screws had a loose fit, so I shimmed them with slices of a wooden match stick. The swjXE code appears about serial number 5616 (like Mauser changed from byf45 to svwMB) - you think the Germans would have other things to worry about than adding work by changing the lettering on all the receiver roll markers. This rifle has the firing proof, final acceptance, and no "H" on the stock. Barrel is pristine. I added an original muzzle cap and sling. No oil anywhere inside, so a little bit of Kroil on the screws and bolt, a wipe of the bore with a snake, and a wipe of the stock. Beautiful late war piece.

I like seeing these. I don't think I will ever get to actually collect guns. I will be lucky enough to keep them as years go by. Just can't keep up with the increases of living...

Got a correct Kriegsmodel butt plate with the hole in it. Finish is a perfect match. Next up will be a range report.

Another interesting find! I'd have no clue whether or not something like that at an auction would be interesting or a good deal. Someday I'd like to have a decent shooter grade Mauser and will probably want to pick the brains of others. Let's see that range report when you have a chance- I'll have my click counter ready to keep a tally of the window holes. [smile]

Best "bang" for your buck value wise is a bolt mismatch; $800+ for a common year/code - and you won't be afraid to shoot it.

Finally got to shoot it today. 79F, extremely humid, light breeze. Benched, 100 yards, 1 box new PPU. Action was extremely stiff - this rifle got very little, if any use. No copper stains on follower, chamber, or bolt face. Loosened up after 15 rounds, but still stiff. Rifle shot extremely low. Started raising the rear sight; 150, 200, and ended at 250 for the last 5. The 12:00 nine is one of those as is the very high one - a flinch. Maybe a little left, but that's probably me. Now back to the rack for a year or two as royalty.

The two snake eyes at the very bottom we're my first two shots; how's that for consistency?

Shot off another original muzzle cap in the process; I'll learn someday![grin]

My wife thought my car needed a navigator as well. I'm thinking of calling him "Fahrvergnugent".

Brownells sells front sights if your looking to get it shooting closer to the sight settings. A little file work and you will be good to go.
Nice job.

I put a tall Brownells into my Depot XII build and have it perfect at 100. As a matched piece, this one stays original. Both my RCs get the lion's share of shooting, as the other one is my ZF-41.
