Rock-wielding Mass. woman fights abduction attempt

FALL RIVER, Mass. - Police say a 66-year-old Massachusetts woman fought off a man trying to abduct her by bashing him in the face repeatedly with a rock and forcing him to flee with blood pouring from his wounds.

Police in Fall River, about 50 miles south of Boston, say the woman was warned by another person about a suspicious vehicle near a park early Sunday afternoon. She picked up a fist-sized rock for protection, and minutes later a man grabbed her and tried to drag her into his car.

The victim kicked the would-be kidnapper and struck him several times with the rock, bloodying his face. He then drove away.

Police say a witness backed up the woman's account. The victim's name wasn't released.

Police checked area hospitals but did not immediately find the suspect. The case remains under investigation.

Was it one of those deadly "assault rocks" that are commonly found in the streets of Masschusetts, just waiting to poiund some innocent person attempting to pick up a woman?

Why can't we get comments on stories like this from "non self-help" Martha Coakley.

Seriously though, we need some sort of Rock Licensing System. To many of these rocks are turning up on street corners. They present a legitimate hazard to public safety.

The subtext here of course, is that the "witness" would have helped but feared legal action by either party (or of course the victim's family if killed) if they were to have intervened. Further they were taught when seconds count, to call 911 wait on hold for several minutes while the victim is killed before their very eyes.

The police are here to protect you!! Don't be a hero! You're not trained for this!! Don't take the law into your own hands!

Where are all these rocks coming from? Mexico's border? Straw purchases? What if an innocent child stumbles upon a rock that is within reach? What has the world come to, we have to act now before it's too late and someone gets hurt [rolleyes]

According to the NRA (National Rock Association), "When rocks are outlawed, only outlaws will have rocks.".

I disagree that she would have better served by a pistol. The attacker could have simply taken it away from her and used it against her, whereas with a rock, he couldn't have taken...wait...no...OK, if he got the rock, he couldn't have used it against...no, wait...I got it: he could have easily snatched a gun away, which has a handle designed for gripping tightly, but not a rock, which is smooth, probably wet, and oddly shaped. That's it.

Yet surely we can reach a Common Ground and enact reasonable rock control laws. Prohibiting rock possession by felons and the mentally unstable; storage laws to keep children from accidental stoning deaths and some sort of tracking system to identify the rock's owner.

Can't do that, Scriv. You would be denying people the right to rock.

Rock on Baby!!!

er Scriv, did you mean Rock Group, like Pink Floyd? There might be some confusion with rock gap and rock group, and then they will start arresting people with guitars.

But it's for the children!

I'll have my lawyer call your lawyer.

who cares if she would have been better served with a pistol, it isn't our choice as to what she, or anyone else, defends herself with.

Those of us that care about the right to keep and bear arms.

an issue constructed from an article that makes zero mention of said issue, no less.

Some people can think outside the box.
