This is the type of thing that will lower crime... the more crimes end this way and the more press time stories like this one get the more people will think twice before committing a crime.... (or they'll move to Boston, NY, DC etc.)
I agree with the basic sentiment but given the territory I doubt it will do much
of anything. Now maybe if we got the ratio up to around 50% failure rate
on carjackings, then the number might plummet... I don't think the deterrent
factor plays a role until the "risk" to the BG reaches an egregious level. (example:
we don"t hear of too many gun stores getting robbed during business hours, for
obvious reasons... because they know the odds are against them. )
Even in places like TX, convenience stores still get robbed, despite the
fact that there is a double digit percentage increase in the amount of
guns around in good hands. Truly bad people are rarely deterred,
at least until someone satisfies their lead deficiency. The problem with
a lot of low-end crime like carjackings and stop and robs is that most of
the perpetrators of those crimes are doing it because they have some
drug habit to feed, and when they're "jonesing" hardcore, the notional of
"risk" goes right out the window.
At least in Detriot people can legally carry a gun to defend themselves if they
jump through the flaming hoops. Compare that to another craphole like
shitcago where you're basically defenseless because you're inside a city where
they have a warped sense of "justice".
