Years ago a friend, who was seraching for the artifacts from WWII, gave me two items he found: a Russian bayonet and a German helmet with a bullet hole in it. When my Dad and me began to wash this helmet, we found fragments of bones inside.
We were extremely impressed.
My grandfather was there with the 2nd Infantry division.
He was the BAR man in his squad.
He used to point at the red arrows on the battle maps and say "see this arrow? I was the tip of it."
That was about all he had to say....
He came home with a Nazi SS Mauser (SS stamped in the frame), a camera, and a pair of binoculars that he received from an SS officer who would not be using them anymore....
