In RI you can take up to 7.

My Dad got two... he shot at the buck, and it didn't go down. so he shot again, and saw it jump, and followed it to where it laid down. He called his hunting buddy to help him drag his deer out of the woods, and they spotted the first one that dropped in its tracks from the first shot. It dropped so fast that Dad didn't see it fall.

Sounds like your dad is lucky he lives in a place where you can draw two tags. In NV the game wardens would give you a pretty rough time.
