That makes no sense. Bail is due back to the prisoner even if guilty, when they show up for trial. The only way he wouldn't be repaid is if he skipped bail and failed to appear.

He shows up for trial and is acquitted, exonerated, whatever the right term is.

Were they threatening that they'd withhold the money if he didn't give up the rifle?

whomever paid the bail gets it back. if they used a bond company they bet the bail but keep the percentage paid as the fee.
