I plan on coming out for this, but I've never shot IDPA. Do I need a cover garment? Is jacketed ammo acceptable (a la WWB)? Approximately how many rounds will I need? I'll be shooting a Ruger SR9. At this point I only have a leather holster. Will this be a problem? I'm not out to be any kind of awesome, I just want to give it a try and have fun while shooting my handgun! Should I look for anyone in particular when I arrive to aquaint me with the process?

Thanks for your patience!

David

Hey David.

You do need a cover garment. You don't need a special vest, though. A leather holster is fine, as long as it's secure and that it's for the strong side (no cross draw allowed).

Check out the idpa rulebook: http://www.idpa.com/Documents/IDPARuleBook2005.pdf for more specific information on holsters. Your gun is in the Stock Service Pistol division, which is explained in the handbook as well. You do need 3 magazines and magazine carriers. If you don't have the carriers, some of the guys usually have extras.

Most all of the experienced shooters will help you out. Let your safety officers know that you're new, and they'll introduce you to some shooters who will help. If you're nice, they won't make you go first :).

The most important thing is to practice safe gun handling. Hope to see you there.

I'm interested in checking out the match with my wife after an appointment we have in the area. Do you allow non-members to come in and watch? As soon as my LTC comes in I'd like to give it a try, but thought checking it out in advance would be fun, too.

Had a great time today! Thanks to everyone I met for making my first IDPA event awesome! And in looking at the scores, I'm pretty happy with how I did, with the exception of Stage 2 where I had my only procedural! Gotta work on that shooting on the move! I think I may have yet another addiction!

Pretty good weather for the match today and another month without having to use a flashlight. I feel pretty lucky that I had a broken a trigger spring on stages one and two but it held together just enough to finish the match.

Shaun, thanks for taking the time to explain things to me today, and thanks for the videos. I hadn't heard that the trigger spring was the cause. Glad you still were able to finish!

Good match, even with the slippery snow on the range.
