Winchester Model 97 problem.

Hi all, I'm a new member, been reading here for a while now and got an idea to redo my ol winchester 97 shotgun. I'm gonna refinish the wood and do a hot rust blue on the metal. This old shotgun is in damn nice shape other than the finish on the wood and metal. My problem is that I can't get the wood grip off the pump slide action bar. Has anyone had any problem with this? The manual says that u take off the forend cap nut from the front and the wood will slide off, but I can't see any way to get this off without tearing it up. Hope somebody here that's worked on these great old shotguns has any advice that can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.
