uv-82

I just got a new toy Baofeng UV-82hp. Now all I need to do is learn how to use it. Advice appreciated.

Buy the programming cable and download CHIRP (Free) and program it that way.

If you want to try and program one manually, here is a great reference for the menus on the Baofeng.

I have two of them and find them to be very reliable. ONLY thing I hate about them is the charger base. The radio NEVER sits in it correctly. I have to wiggle the thing around to get the contacts to hit the battery terminals. Both of them do this...so I know it isn't a one off issue.

Good luck!

Anyone have any experience programing yaesu vx6 radios with chirp? I can program baofeng radios pretty well butthe yaesu i can upload the csv file to the radio and it will recieve traffic but gives me an error message when i try to transmit. Also i can't see how to change the radio settings in chirp like i can with a baofeng.

I have programmed my VX7R with CHIRP and with VX commander, I like the commander software better.

Go to Amazon and buy a Nagoya NA-771 SMA FEMALE antenna for it first thing, it will improve VHF performance greatly.

Also, a $5 speaker mic will allow you to keep the radio out of the rain in a pocket, pack or under your coat....cheap insurance.

If you don't have it already, get a programming cable with driver disk.

Then go to http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home
and download the latest build software for your operating system on your computer.

From there, you can program your radio quickly and save the programs as you alter them.

I use the UV-82's and the UVB6 radios here on the farm with great success.

My only complaint on the 82 is the PTT button sits too proud and is prone to keying if carried in a tight pocket in a pack.

update:

i got the 15" antenna and the usb cable, downloaded chirp to a pc (mac and linux didn't work for me)
fun starts, programmed in a few local channels and it worked!

thanks all for the info & advice. the most amazing thing was baofeng shipped the usb cable to me from china in less than 5 days. thier disc was useful for getting the usb driver for windows. from that chirp is the way to go.

EDIT: Supposedly there is a genuine usb cable that does not require drivers that works with the mac $20 vs $3. Don't want to mess with native usb drivers so I've ordered it. I did get Chirp working on the mac after installing a python runtime.
