Hearings Will Determine Whether Barr is Committed to the 2nd Amendment

Dear Gun Owner:

As if we didn't have enough gun control to fight recently, we now have another battle emerging.

To replace Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, President Trump has nominated an individual who has advocated very restrictive gun control proposals in the past.

The Senate Judiciary Committee began confirmation hearings on the nominee today.

His name is William Barr, and he actually served as U.S. Attorney General once before under President George H.W. Bush from 1991-1993.

It was during the hearings for that position in 1991 that William Barr expressed his support for gun control:

On the assault weapon front, the proposal before us is the DeConcini amendment. And I think ... I would support both the Brady Bill waiting period and the DeConcini [semi-auto ban] amendment, provided that they were parts of a broader and more comprehensive crime bill that included ... very tough provisions on the use of firearms in crimes and illegal purchase and trading in firearms...

So Barr endorsed both the Brady Check portion of the Brady Bill and the semi-auto ban, although he did express a preference for magazine bans: "I would prefer a limitation on the clip [sic] size."

You can see Barr's remarks at the 1:42:23 mark in this C-Span video.

No excuses for supporting 2A infringements

I wouldn't be surprised if Barr defends his past support for gun control by reiterating what he said in 1991.

That is, he supported firearms restrictions as part of a grand bargain to get several "tough on crime" provisions.

But that excuse is not going to fly with the pro-gun community. Because our rights are protected by the Constitution and they can't be bargained away or negotiated.

Barr might also say his support for gun control was "pre-Heller" -- as if that really makes a difference.

If that is Barr's excuse, then that just means Barr believes that outlawing a large category of firearms is "okey-dokey" if it's alright with the Supreme Court.

Either way, these excuses won't fly.

Look, I realize that someone's views can change in 20-plus years.

Criminologists like Dr. Gary Kleck have changed their views on gun control.

So have judges like Sanford Levinson ... law enforcement such as Officer John Cardillo and Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri ... legislators like Rep. Ron Silver ... media executives such as NPR CEO Ken Stern.

In other words, there are lots of people who eventually wise up and "see the light."

As for Barr, we don't have any recent statements from him on gun control (pro or con).

But unless Barr can publicly renounce his previous views on gun control and publicly oppose the positions advocated by his boss-to-be -- by taking a firm and unequivocal stand against Red Flag Gun Confiscation Orders -- then we're calling on the Senate to reject his nomination.

So please urge Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D) and Sen. Edward Markey (D) to vote NO on William Barr, unless the candidate demonstrates indisputable support for the Second Amendment.

Thank you for your help.

This might be why Sen. Diane Frankenstein stated today that Barr has an easy road to confirmation. Barr also alluded to the fact that his stance on gun control changed "post-Heller" and that the focus should now be on mental health and erpo laws. However, reading his exact words doesn't imply any confidence in what he stated since he said "there's reasonable room for regulation on firearms laws":

3:40 p.m.: Barr calls gun violence ‘the problem of our time’

Calling the gun violence epidemic the “problem of our time,” Barr called for improvements in state gun laws that would help authorities detect people with mental illnesses to ensure they don’t have access to firearms.

In his afternoon testimony, Barr acknowledged that the current background check system for firearms is “sort of piecemeal” and called for states to pass red flag laws, which would allow guns to be temporarily seized from those people deemed a threat. Such laws would help supplement background checks to ensure people with mental illnesses could not obtain a gun, Barr said.

“This is the single most important thing I think we can do in the gun control area to stop these massacres from happening in the first place,” Barr said under questioning from Feinstein, one of the fiercest advocates of stricter gun laws.

Barr added, “We really need to get some energy behind it and get it done.”

The attorney general nominee continued to speak about gun policy under questioning from Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.). Barr said while the right to own a gun is protected under the Second Amendment, “there’s room for reasonable regulation” on firearms laws.

“What I would look for is . . . what’s the burden on law-abiding people, and is it proportionate to whatever benefit in terms of safety and effectiveness will be conferred?” Barr told Cornyn. “As I said just a moment ago, let’s get down to the real problem we’re confronting, which is keeping these weapons out of the hands of people who are mentally ill.”

I am very confused by the original post (the attachment), are we really supposed to ask warren and marky to not vote for him, if he’s AGAINST red flag laws?? Wouldn’t that then make them want to vote for him even more? Holy shit maybe I need a drink to settle my old eyes or are those maggots suddenly pro 2A now?

This'll be easy to do from MA.

Ask lizzie to make sure he isn't pro-gun as its the only way to protect the safety of the children- we all saw the sham that was the confirmation hearings.
