I know the law indicates that as long as your firearms are locked up in your trunk and not loaded you can travel through states that you do not have a license as long as you are legally able to have these firearms in the departing and destination states.

Here's my question though. I live in a town right on the RI border. At times, when I'm shooting in Southern Massachusetts, the fastest route home is through RI. If my firearms are properly locked up for transport, can I leave Mass, go through RI and enter Mass again legally using the transporting laws? Obviously I'm legal to own them in the beginning state and the destination state. It's just that they are the same state. Not sure if that is a grey area with this law.

You should be covered by FOPA-86, but I think RI law might also
support what you're doing, as well.

Yes, you are OK going through Rhode Island with that. The instructor I had for my safety course enlightened us with the "passing through law" of Rhode Island. What I gathered from that is as long as you're not there for a long extended period you're ok.
