Have you messed around with LoRa at all? This seems to be focused on satellites but I know it's got more terrestrial applications. Awhile back I was tempted to make a chain to get weather data from my super secret squirrel location to my house, and just stash these along the way. I have no idea if that would work, but that was my idea anyway.
