A driver working on his broken-down vehicle near Walterboro with his wife and mother-in law nearby shot an armed robber who confonted them, according to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.

>snip<

Malone said the three victims were traveling southbound on I-95 in two separate vehicles, one of them pulling a U-haul trailer.

The vehicle pulling the trailer started having mechanical trouble and they pulled off onto the exit ramp at McLeod Road.

They called for a tow truck and began to transfer the U-haul trailer from the disabled vehicle to the second vehicle.

The two women stood near the other vehicle and trailer while the man was down near the bumper trying to wire the trailer lights into his truck.

Malone said that’s when a silver colored sedan with three people inside pulled up.

An armed man stepped out and pointed the gun at the older woman, as he covered his face with a cloth.

The woman’s son-in-law stood up from behind his vehicle and she ran to her daughter as they took cover.

The son-in-law was armed and drew his weapon and ordered the robbers to leave.

Malone said the robber, armed with 50-caliber Desert Eagle handgun, pointed the gun at the son-in-law.

That’s when the son-in-law fired several rounds, hitting the robber.

The man who shot him recently returned from the Middle East as an Army Specialist and has a concealed weapons permit to carry his weapon.

Malone said he will not be charged since he acted in self-defense.

Boston headline would be: Armed man shoots motorist on the side of highway. xxx was turning his life around when a disgruntled veteran shoots him on the side of the road.

Nay, Misbehaven...The robbery victim was the vet. ;-)

Um yeah, I know. [rolleyes] I was posting AFTER Mousegunfan. AS IN "IF" THIS HAPPENED IN MA that the headline WOULD HAVE BEEN turned around to read that the Veteran was disgruntled and the would be piece of shit robber was turning his life around.... I WAS ADDING THAT the headline could of also been....."IF" (because we are in MA & there are so many restrictions in getting a LTC, that IF the Veteran DID NOT have his) THAT he wouldn't of been able to defend himself & his family and would of ended up DEAD..... (proving the need of having a weapon to defend oneself...)[slap]

Nah. They'd be much more subtle.

Day 1: "Highway Shooting Raises Concerns Over Violent Tendencies In Returning Soldiers". Then they'd follow up a sympathetic portrait of the shooting "victim", who was hoping to soon marry the mother of his two children.

Day 3: "Road Rage Incident Sparks Renewed Interest in Toughening Handgun Licensing Laws". The AG would decry the easy availability of handguns in Massachusetts. A Mayor would hold an SKS over his head and decry the presence of "these weapons of war" on "our streets". An interview with the elderly and crippled mother of the "Road Rage" victim would be featured, in which she decries the gunshots heard nightly from her bedroom window.

Day 5: "Spate Of Recent Violence Brings Calls For Further Restrictions on Firearms"

Day 28: "New Gun Legislation Moves Through Senate. Governor Urges Passage of 'Safe And Peaceful Scenes Of Urban Serenity And Happy Families And Children Act' ".

Well, you're all famiiar with the drumbeat.

I am sure Martha would be pleased in your scenario that "Massachusetts gun laws work." She doesn't encourage "self help," so it would no doubt disturb her that someone defended themselves and survived... The last thing we want in this state is infringe on the rights of violent criminals. After all, they are just trying to feed their families and as you say, are no doubt, with the help of the probation and parole system in MA, getting all the help they need...

[laugh] [thinking] [sad2] <- it's not funny because its true...
