Are there laws on gun safes? Is there an approval test or standard that must be passed? Anyone know where there is information posted on this?

UL tests and rating for safes are what are used by insurance companies.

If you get an FFL and have Class 3 toys, I suspect that BATFE has some rules on what is/is not acceptable as a safe.

Here's some info on how to buy, translate the ratings, etc.

Here's some more info . . . might be more sales pitch than useful, but . . .

And just remember, if you buy the safe in MA, you don't pay sales tax. So look for that because there are people that don't know that, and will charge you the tax on accident.

Len might be able to point you to the correct MGL, but I know that it's for Safes and Trigger locks.

What he needs is the DOR issued TIR. Print it out and bring it shopping with you. The last item on the TIR is what you are looking for.

Some dealers KNOW this, but will intentionally charge you the sales tax anyway. Law Enforcement Supply in Waltham did this to me (i.e. Walter Duddy - the owner) and then argued with me about it. Caveat emptor!! I no longer shop there because of this and I advise others to take due notice and govern themselves accordingly!

MA DOR asked me to file a formal tax fraud complaint against LE Supply when I advised them of what happened. That would have triggered a criminal investigation. I chose not to do this, but I choose to do my business elsewhere and tell everyone why.

Rip-off!

Go to Mendon. The guys there were great - THEY told me about the sales tax exemption! Good selection and they go to the gun shows, too. 8)

I've bought a safe and a safe lock (an old safe and the lock mechanism wore out) from them. Top notch products and delivery. Huge showroom full of safes of all sizes.

O' I know that place. I drive by it when I take the back roads to Milford. For som reason I was thinking of a gun shop. Thank you
