So far as I can tell... Kid were pelting the car with stones, then the officer shot a kid about to throw a molotov cocktail his car. The kid died. He's being charged with "murder with malicious intent", the government has condemned the shooting, and teenagers across the country are rioting, smashing storefronts, burning businesses, and threatening public safety and lives.

Hundreds of young self-styled anarchists rioted in the streets Sunday and attacked police in several Greek cities in a fury over the shooting death of a teenager by a member of an elite police corps.

The shooting on Saturday night triggered demonstrations and violence across the country, which had not abated by Sunday.

"It at first seemed like it was calming down today, but then at 5 p.m. Athens time it kicked off again," said Joel Brown, a CNN senior press officer visiting Athens. "There are lots of burning bins and debris in the street and a huge amount of tear gas in the air, which we got choked with on the way back to our hotel."

Tourists holed up in downtown Athens hotels were told by hotel staff not to leave their rooms as police fanned out across the city, Brown said.

The U.S. and British embassies issued warnings to employees and tourists on Sunday, instructing them to avoid downtown Athens and other major cities until rioting subsides.

The police officer who fired the fatal shot has been charged with "manslaughter with intent" and suspended from duty, police said, adding that a second police officer was arrested Saturday on criminal accessory charges.

Demonstrators barricaded city streets Sunday in Athens and Thessaloniki and hurled petrol bombs as they battled with police, who fought back with tear gas in the second day of rioting. Video Watch youths riot in Greece »

Rampaging youths smashed storefronts and burned businesses, leaving shattered glass and burnt debris scattered across both cities.

Residents of an apartment building in central Athens were evacuated on Sunday after angry demonstrators torched a car dealership on the basement floor.

A police statement about the boy's death said the incident started when six young protesters pelted a police patrol car with stones. The 16-year-old boy was shot as he tried to throw a fuel-filled bomb at the officers, police said.

Other youths converged on the site almost immediately.

These young people -- often referred to in Greece as " the known-unknowns" -- use texting and Web sites to organize and communicate.

Fighting between youths and police quickly erupted in other parts of Greece, including Thessaloniki, the country's second largest city. Hundreds of youths took to the streets of the sprawling port city, and finally barricaded themselves behind the gates of a state university, where police are barred from entering.

No deaths were reported, though police say several police officers have been injured. iReport.com: Are you there? Share photos, video of rioting

Government officials, fearing more violence, swiftly condemned the shooting.

"An investigation is under way and those found responsible with be punished," said Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos. "Measures will also be taken to avoid such incidents again in the future."

So a 16 year old kid was about to throw a fire bomb at a police officer, the police officer shot him dead and the police officer is being charged with manslaughter with intent. Is it just me or does something not seem right there?

If that story has most of the facts I feel bad for the cop. WTF is going on in the world these days that we tolerate this type of violence from youth.

What the hell is an 'anarchist' anyway. Didn't we have a problem with them around the turn of the century? Sacco and Vanzetti?

I don't understand how people can be sympathetic to rioting and throwing firebombs. The French seem to have the same problem.

This is European socialist mentality at its finest: Law and order is worthless. Violence is OK.

Greek police should strike. Let Athens, Olympia, and every other city in Greece fester in anarchy.

Umm.. ok. Preach on brother Jose. (Seriously Olympia? Do you know where that is on a map? Population? Thats like condemning the town of Dracut.)

Most towns in Greece don't have police departments as they are not needed. Only the major cities. Its not the USA, they don't have our problems.

Their major problems are economic, not crime. Their law enforcement do not have the same rights our officers do. They also don't have the same issues we do, nor are they as well trained. It is a system that works for them ... for the most part. Like ours works for us ... for the most part.

I dont know any details other than what is written so there certainly may be more than meets the eye but going off of what is written here is my take on it.......

the little turd was going to throw a MC firebomb at a Cop. He deserves to get shot. PERIOD.... The Officer was in fear for his life (Serious bodily injury harm or death) so he utilized deadly force.... He is authorized..... I dont know what justification an Officer in Greece needs but in America thats our justification (tweaked a little from state to state of course)overall and I am amazed that in Greece thats not enough. Something is wrong here for sure.

It seems this might be part of the problem that the officer is facing:
A police statement said one officer fired three shots after their car was attacked by a group of 30 youths in Exarchia. A police official said the officer described his fire as warning shots but witnesses told Greek TV he took aim at the boy.

If you're going to bother with warning shots, just aim for your foot. It will be less painful in the long run and accomplish the same thing.

The government has no control there, at best they can only attempt to work with the riots and side with them in order to prevent more violence.

The government knows the officer was protecting himself, and that shooting had nothing illegal in it. However if they use the officer as a scapegoat then the riots may not last as long, if they protect the officer the riots will be worse.

Therefore they will blame the officer since they have lost control of their country. Sad.

riots

roastie is right: they want to stop the rioting and they are afraid of the rioters.they know these youths are probable socialists and they dont want to crack down on them.just like here the police know who the criminals are but cant do any thing till thhey can prove a crime and then a weak judge will let them off.that is going on all over europe, but not well known here.
