That is why I was pretty excited when I thought low cost UV-5R would work. Low cost and not useless if my town changed its systems. Plus I thought it might be cool to have the radio available, I am in no way a 'prepper' type, but if I could use it to monitor police and as a 2 way radio in case of emergency, it would be good to have, and possibly even get a license (managed to pass the technician sample exam without studying anything). I will review your recommendations. I welcome others recommendations as well, I really just want to monitor the Northbridge police frequencies when I am home, (don't really need mobile, though it might be nice).
