I've recently picked up a L3 x200xp thermal viewer for scanning the area, proir to engagment of targets.... works really well if you are the hunter.

I had the joy to take a look and the civilian DBAL... and that sucker works awesome. It's not going to be as nice as the military version, but you won't go to jail and you will not be disappointed. I think they are better than the older MilSpec units.

you won't go to jail for having a military grade NV unit. it is not illegal at all.

Snagged an ATN Night Leopard off of CL for $85 yesterday. I saw it and figured why not. It is an older 3x Gen 1 monocular. Played with it a bit last night. I could see to the woodline about 40-50 yds from the house without the IR. It would be good enough to at least ID that something or someone was out there. When I turned on the IR it was clear enough to ID what it was. I would definitely say it has its place but its limitations are obvious. It uses CR123 3v batts. Wish it was AA as that is what most of my stuff is.
