NEW BEDFORD — Police officers shot and killed a city man armed with two knives during a confrontation Wednesday in the South End, police say.

Police did not release identity of the man Wednesday. Officials said his name, along with other details surrounding the shooting, will be discussed during a press conference tomorrow at New Bedford Police Headquarters.

Jeffrey P. Silva said the incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. today after police officers responded to a report of a knife-wielding man on Ellen Street, located off Brock Avenue in the South End.

When the officers arrived, they found the man armed with two knives, Lt. Silva said. The man reportedly threatened the officers, who repeatedly ordered him to drop the knives, police said.

Lt. Silva declined to say if the man lunged at the officers. He confirmed the shooting happened inside the man’s Ellen Street residence. He said the officers were defending themselves when they shot the man.

“‘When the assailant refused to drop the knives, the officers had to defend themselves,” Lt. Silva said.

The man was killed at the scene.

As a standard protocol, the officer-involved shooting will be investigated by detectives in the New Bedford Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, as well as investigators from the Professional Standards Division and the Massachusetts State Police unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

The officers involved in Wednesday’s shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Well you called that one:

"There is absolutely no redeeming value to somebody having these weapons," Mayor Lang said. "When they go to use them, it leads to tremendous consequences."

From todays New Bedford Sub Standard Times article

"Frightening array of blades ...." I know that I'm terribly frightened by these blades. Or maybe it's the array that frightens me. I'm so confused, but someone should pass a law to protect me.

"A man killed a pedestrian while drunk driving at over 100mph yesterday....in related news, a frightening array of these weapons can be found in huge numbers along the "auto mile" and are available for purchase by anyone with the funds..."

So stockpile/cache/arsenal when it's 2 guns...
and
array when it's 2 knives. My multi-tool has 3 different types of knives. I wonder what they'd call that.

By coincidence, the sub-Standard ran an article a few days prior about an increase in crimes committed with knives.
The response by Mayor Lang is typical; he great with sound bites. Oh, it was a common kitchen knife.

On Feb. 1, a video rental store on Acushnet Avenue was robbed by a man who walked into the store, brandished a knife at the cashier, and demanded money.

A month earlier, the same business, Movieland Store, had been robbed by another knife-wielding man who walked into the store at night, held a knife to the cashier, and stole an undetermined amount of cash.

According to todays paper these "weapons" were kitchen knives. Since there is "no redeeming value" to having these, one must wonder how food is prepared in the Lang home without such items.

Limitations on weaponry don't apply to members of the Ruling Class, only the subjects they rule. I'm sure Mr. Lang has a heavily armed guard somewhere close.
