What is the 8.N.N marking on the receiver?

I had to listen to The Forgotten Soldier on audible and got hooked.
You can see the disadvantage the Backbone of the Wehrmacht bolt action (supported by those few within the units with MP40s and MG42 MGs) were up against large numbers of adversaries and many armed with ppsh41s, pps-43 smgs, M1 garands and carbines in the later years.

Why is this?
 
N.N. is probably 8mm.

Most of the '42 production was lost on the Eastern front. One of the scarcer years. Most common is '44.
