No ordinary battle, no ordinary man: Avail yourself of the Army’s online “battlescape” feature, which takes you step by step through Romesha’s actions the day the Taliban attacked — and briefly entered — Combat Outpost Keating in 2009. The base was attacked on multiple sides, U.S. troops were outnumbered roughly eight to one, several buildings inside the wire ended up on fire, and Romesha himself was injured early in the battle when an RPG hit the generator he was standing on while returning fire. And yet the base was ultimately secured, due in part not to an action he took but six separate actions, not including his effort to recover the fallen — again, while under fire. If you can’t spare 10 minutes to go carefully through the “battlescape,” at least study the last of the 14 slides. Mind-boggling.
