Is there an "average" time that it takes licenses to come in? I took care of everything down at the local PD back at the beginning of January and it still hasn't come in yet (43 days and counting). I'm just curious as to how much longer I may have to wait. I went down the police station and they just say someone will call when it comes in, it's getting frustrating. I'm getting anxious about turkey season and want to pick up a shotgun long enough before the season starts to pattern it and get use to it...[frown]

Don't know about Dracut, but some places it takes 30 days or less and others 6 months wait is not unusual. It really depends on whether or not the PD "does their job" in processing the applications in a timely fashion . . . some do and others do what they can to jerk their residents around.

30-45 days seems like within the "normal (for MA) range".

If your PD is fast and the state is fast, inside of 30 days. If everyone is
slow, inside of 90 days. In the old days, it wasn't uncommon for
most action to easily soar past the 45 day line. From outward appearance,
I think that is still the case in a lot of places.

I believe by law that if it takes over 40 days from the time you applied you can assume you've been refused and appeal it in court. Check out massgunlaw and the goal site, or maybe someone here will have some more information. I turned mine in last tuesday and I'm already getting anxious [thinking]

I read that same 40 day deal, but heard so many stories of it taking longer than that to get an answer that I didn't really know what to do. Obviously MA doesn't have to adhere to it's own laws...the socialists never cease to amaze me.

Patience my grasshopper; you apply 43 days ago? that only 29 business days. [hmmm]

I feel your pain. I waited about 60 days for mine. I do wonder whether the number of applications has picked up since November swamping the CHSB.

Took mine 59 days in a "gun friendly" town.

I would not make any kind of appeal reguarding the 40 day law until you are sure that you have been denied b/c you probably are just waiting like everyone else at this point.

Tomorrow is 15 weeks for me in a gun friendly town. Sigh ... not much I can seem to do to move this along.

It can't be that gun friendly. Since the state turns around their end of the application process pretty quickly, that means that this "gun friendly town" has been had either your original application or the approved license sitting around somewhere in their office, jerking your chain, for at least two months. Sounds like time to light a fire under somebody.

15 weeks! Good god, have you called anyone yet? I just called CHSB on Monday asking about mine and they informed me that it got printed out THAT day (it's been 8 weeks for me). If I don't have it by Monday (60 days) then I'm giving the station a call to put a fire under their asses. They told me it usually takes around 60 days, I couldn't imagine dragging my feet on a job for that long.

Pemi-Man, you'd be better off being tactful with your local PD. While they have taken an extremely long time, they have it within their power to make sure it gets lost in some file or pile of paperwork and you have no legal recourse. Just casually mention the fact that it was just printed, but don't go off on them.

NOT true. Not even close.

Any application not acted on w/i 40 days is deemed DENIED and can be appealed accordingly.

Note that CHSB informing you that the license was printed when the PD is telling you it's "waiting for the state) is evidence that the PD is jerking you off.

I should have stated it better, I called CHSB on Monday because it's been about 8 weeks since I turned in my application, I was informed that it was printed that day, so I'll give the PD a week to give me a call before I call them. I haven't called the PD since talking to CHSB.

Nope, they gave me a "first time issuence" which is Class A Hunting and Target. The Sgt. said they give all firstimers the Class A restricted...but it's better than nothing for now.

I just wanted to add to this thread (the only thing that I've seen providing me with at least SOME information on this question). I applied on December 18, 2008. Still waiting as of April 15, 2009. I dont mind waiting, truly, but I have to admit it is a bit frustrating not to be able to get any info from anyone. CHSB said they cant answer. The local PD does not return a phone message or in-person message. Quite strange, as he seemed to indicate no problem and processed everything real time when I visited, including on-line input to the system and fingerprinting, etc.. Strange. I have not followed up outside of the one phone call and the in-person message because the last thing I want to do is appear overly anxious. However, I must say that even "some" kind of response that says "in process" or "we'll call you" would be appreciated. Dont want to begin any kind of appeal process because it may very well be just that the process is extremely slow. I was just excited to finally stop renting or borrowing at the range and get out there with my own (after all my research about which pistol was my favorite), warm weather coming, etc. Anyway, hope my bit of information is useful.

6 months to get an appointment and one week waiting still [sad2]

I would like to add a year ago 3 guys were working on the gun permits and now there is just one.
