Finally figured out what was going wrong and figured I'd post it in case anyone else was having the same problem.
The problem was that after the barrel was put in the slide, and the recoil rod placed into the radial cut on the lug you could not get the slide to retract to get the slide stop pin in, even though you had pushed down the blades that pop up at the back of the slide.
It turns out the secret is to not touch the grip safety - at all!
Since most of us tend to grip a $2k pistol fairly firmly when working on it, this is not exactly obvious. There is a video on YouTube that show how 1 person does it with their left hand and a block of wood
