Gang unit's main fight
By Brian McGrory, Globe Columnist | April 8, 2007

"It's a little after 6 on a gloomy Friday night when police Commissioner Edward F. Davis and Mayor Thomas M. Menino walk into a small meeting room at the Police Department's gang - unit headquarters for the evening roll call.

About two dozen men, members of the gang unit, circled the small room...

They are the officers on the front lines in the city's battle against violence, the ones who stand closest to danger, and Davis wants to know what's on their minds...

One officer says that, contrary to conventional wisdom, he's seeing far fewer guns than during the violent stretch from the late 1980s into the early 1990s.

"There's more killing going on, but these are hits," the officer said. "There aren't more guns."

Davis quickly chimes in, "They are hits. They're very precise. It's not like there's a lot of random activity out there..."

derek: I think you're missing the point. Clearly, New Hampshire has cleaned up it's program of illegally exporting guns to Mass. [smile]

Maybe the thugs are just hiding them better.

"I'm Seeing Less Guns On the Streets of Boston"

[rolleyes]

An officer says that youths are bored. Another adds, "These kids just want to belong to something. Make their gangs their schools. If we gave them uniforms and a sport, they'll battle the right way."

Or, how about their parents take an active role in their lives, and stick around. When 68% of the black community is born out of wedlock, and the fathers want nothing to do with the kids, AND this seems like a normal situation, we're headed for a disaster, and more cops, more mignight basketball, or less guns won't fix the problem.

No doubt the street cops are out there working their butts off, but they're not supported by Menino, Flynn is trying to cover his hiney, and we know that Patrick's head is as far up his rear as it could possibly be.

Just a side note - For the guy who makes the cool emoticons, we need a head up the rear end emoticon - a la Christy Mihos' ads.
