If you can get the 12mm or 1/2" straws. The added size helps with the fire starter. It compacts the cotton ball less and allows you to liquify the petroleum jelly and pour it into the straw. The straw also helps as it also becomes fuel.

You could make larger versions for cold weather. Just use more straw.

I prefer something like this
http://www.rei.com/product/653343/esbit-pocket-stove I actually care this and use it while backpacking. It fits inside my "cook" pot along with 12 fuels tabs and my fire kit (which is in an altoids tin)
