I am looking to get a vertical handle (if that makes sense). I assume I need a lower rail or could I buy one of those rail setups that is basically a cover? I am a newbie I have a S&W MP15 sport

thx for any help

Sounds like you just want to add a vertical foregrip to the existing M4 hand guards. I am sure you can find them cheaper but a quick google search has the following:

I'd personally just buy some KAC picatinny rails and replace the stock hand guards. Should be able to find KAC rails on the cheap.

Here are some Midwest Industries drop in two piece rail system.

If you want something simple get the Magpul MOE or SL handguard. You can add a vertical grip to either handguard but there are options available for adding other accessories and rail attachments.

I don't like the way angled foregrips look, but find them very comfortable and natural feeling. I'd consider a vfg if I were building a very short sbr with minimal handguard space.

OP, I suggest you try both before committing to the required modification to your firearm required to accept hand guard mounted accessories.

I find my rifle is much more comfortable to shoot with a short vertical grip. It's not always about being tacticool.

I don't know much about the stock M&P15 handguard, but I have the Magpul MOE handguard with a Magpul MOE VFG. They're both relatively cheap and the VFG bolts into a slot in the handguard. Easy peasy.

Edit: I tried an angled fore grip first and didn't like it. YMMV.

Thanks y'all! That angled foregrip looks pimp!

Can I easily attach/install the tactical handguard and foregrip by myself?

To each his own. Buy whatever you think you want, run it, and decide what you like and don't like about it. Sell it and buy something else if you don't like it. That's the only way you'll ever know, because everybody is different. But the key is to actually use the thing in training, not just stick whatever looks cool on your rifle.

I've tried the angled foregrip a few times and it's just not comfortable for me. Adds bulk without much advantage. I like a lightweight tubular free float handguard with nothing on it except a TLR-1 on top and a QD sling mount on the side. My wife prefers a MOE handguard. I've looked at VFGs several times but never felt the need for them. Again, to each his own. Explore your options.

+1 on the Magpul MOE and VFG.

I tried the AFG too but like the VFG much better.

Maybe.

Place the rifle butt down and muzzle up and grab the delta ring, which is spring loaded, and push it toward the receiver. If you can push it hard enough to remove both pieces of your current forend then yes, you can do it yourself. If not, you'll need a handguard removal tool like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Tapco-Intrafu...2&sr=8-3&keywords=ar15+handguard+removal+tool

You put it around the delta ring and hook it into the mag well and then push the delta ring down.
