The incident began when an intruder entered the home of an off-duty deputy sheriff and approached a family member, demanding keys to a car, according to the statement. The deputy confronted and chased the intruder, driving after him and reporting by cell phone to sheriff's dispatchers.
The chase led to a field near Mauna Loa Street and Timberlane Avenue where the deputy waited for on-duty officers. Before they arrived, the statement says, Baljos approached the deputy's vehicle and stabbed him at least twice with a screwdriver.
As the attack continued, an armed civilian who had spotted an intruder in a neighbor's backyard several minutes earlier saw the struggle and fired a warning shot into the air, according to the statement.....
