After seeing 30Mauser's gorgeous Broomhandle, I decided to pursue my long time collection goal: a Type 17 Broomhandle in 45 ACP, made in Taiyuan Arsenal, in Shanxi Province in the 1920's and 30's. Finally, UPS delivered one to my house today.
One of the most comprehensive discussion of this gun can be found at: www.pointshooting.com/c96ok.pdf
The Governor-General/Warlord of the Province I grew up, Yan Xishan, gave a cash reward to his arsenal engineers, to make a Broomhandle in 45ACP because he wanted to consolidate his ammunition supply. Thompson SMG was the long gun of choice for his troops. Low and behold one of the engineer came up with the design.
About 8,500 of these were manufactured in Taiyuan Arsenal, nested in my childhood home town. My grandpa used to tell me the stories of General Yan and his troops. So it has some additional sentimental value to me.
John Wayne had his Colt SAA. All my childhood movie heroes used Broomhandles. This is what they used to kick 'Japanese Devils' butt (WII movies). I'm just glad that I was able to find one in short amount of time, and now I get to be the custodian of this special piece of history in my life time.
BTW, the wooden holster is original, and can clip on the pistol grip to convert it to a shoulder-fired carbine. The best part is that ATF exempts it from the SBR rules specifically. So I got my first SBR today too!
