Black Powder Riflemen,

The club will be hosting Gong Shoots again this year. We will be having 3 of these shoots, which will include one that will be billed as the “Maine State Championships”, Black Powder Rifle Gong Shoot.

Our Gong Shoots consist of shooting at steel targets from 50, 75, 100 & 125 yards from various positions at 4 separate locations. The 50 yard stage is shot from the prone position using cross-sticks. The 75 yard stage is shot from the sitting position using cross-sticks. The 100 yard stage is shot offhand. The 125 yard stage is shot from a bench rest position.

Excuse my ignorance but the firing positions seem backwards from the normal order of things in other disciplines.

It seems like the shooting positions get less stable as the distance to target increases (prone at 50 yds vs standing at 100 yds). This Highpower and Smallbore shooter is curious as to why.
