Anyone restore a duffel cut stock?

George D,

Here are my three posts. My technique was a variation I found on the Gunboards K98 forum (http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?4615-Repairing-a-quot-duffle-cut-quot-(pics)). It took me two tries to get it right. I was a little afraid as the rifle was a beautiful matching (bolt MM) K98. It wasn't perfect, but the repairs have held up for 200 rounds and it shoots very well. The pictures tell the story, but I can also talk to you about it.

I was looking at buying a broken fore end but then I wasn't sure if the wood was the same. This is for a Czech K98 Mauser with the bent bolt cutout. I bought a complete CZ24 stock with barrel bands, bayo lug and handguard from Numrich. It showed up yesterday but it needs to be fitted to work. The site is larger on my K98 and the back of the receiver is shaped differently, I need to remove a little of the wood inside the back of the stock. The trigger guard/magazine fits fine.

Not bad. You should go for broke and strip the new stock and put a tung oil finish on it. That'd bring out the grain in the Czech wood which is often really nice.

I'll keep my eyes open for a cheap K98 stock and send you the link if I find one if you want to make it a little more original.

I kept bidding on J&G on ebay and forgot about one. I just won a K98 stock with the indent, not sure if the buttplate is the same. Need a cleaning rod and a sight hood next.

I thought about trying to fix my 1917 Eddystone stock and got another piece of stock to try the 'merge'. But after really thinking about it, I searched and found a complete stock on Numrich and went that way. I'm glad I did.
