I post mostly in the Milsurp forum, and currently using IMGUR as a host site. Most of my topics are historical and/or collector related, but also picture intensive. All pics are now gone, but still appear on other forums. Other NES members have asked me to reload. I do, and the pics appear for an hour or two, then disappear again.

I see that there is an Imgur subject from last month in the Tech Forum just a few threads down the list, detailing the same problem. It also references similar problems on AR15.com, but not sure if there is a resolution, yet?

http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/threads/301409-Browser-problem-server-problem-or-Imjur-problem

I am in no way tech savvy beyond point, click, type and link to urls, so I'll be no help from my end. Using Firefox, if that helps.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Probably should provide a link to one of the historical/informational threads in which the pictures don't show, but the links to photos can be viewed if the "Reply With Quote" function.

Note: This same topic is posted on several other forums. The images work on all other forums except NES.

Thanks for looking into this.
---------------------------------------------

Edit to add: I reloaded a couple of picture into the above linked thread. Many of the pictures then became visible, but not all of them.

Weird stuff!
----------------------------------------------

Edit again: See post reply #12 below. dooshorama's suggestion allowed all the IMGUR pictures to reload, such as in the NES thread which was linked within this reply.

More weird stuff!

Anyway, it seems that I have been able to recover my pics on this forum, for now. I will add if I do get a response from IMGUR support.

The imgur server will sporadically block hotlinking from an entire website seemingly at random.

TL;DR: The requests referred by northeastshooters.com for images hosted at imgur are being rejected by imgur; Here's what imgur is sending in the replies:

HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden
Retry-After: 0
Content-Type:
Content-Length: 0
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 2016 14:40:58 GMT
Connection: close
X-Served-By: cache-atl6229-ATL
X-Cache: MISS
X-Cache-Hits: 0
X-Timer: S1455547258.481017,VS0,VE0
Access-Control-Allow-Methods: GET, OPTIONS
Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *
Server: cat factory 1.0

It appears the server doesn't want to return the image when the request comes via northeastshooters.com.

No fix, workaround is to rehost somewhere else.

Thank you for the conclusive information that the problem is on IMGUR's end, and not ours.

Hopefully, IMGUR will reconsider or work it out. Meanwhile, I can use NES uploading, as it seems the choices for alternate (free) hosting are limited and/or cumbersome.

It would appear that someone linked something, at some point, that violated imgurs TOS and we are now blacklisted. I'm trying to get more information from them currently.

I would suggest hosting images on here for the meantime...

I have also put in a message to the Help Desk at IMGUR. If I receive a reply, I will post it here.

Meanwhile, I went back to some of my threads in which the pictures were not appearing, and reloaded a few links. Low and behold, I could then see some of the pictures (not all of them). Whether the visible pics are going to be visible to all, or are just a temporary view remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, I'll attempt to load a pic from an IMGUR link. I'd appreciate it if members can confirm that it is visible, please? Thanks.

(I can see it)

Above pic is visible from both HTTP and HTTPS domains. It does appear that the issue is intermittent, and usually does not persist through a reload.

I can see the pic above.

Thanks for confirmation of visibility. I may just have to reload pics in the informational threads. PIA, for sure, as sometimes I have dozens of pics!

Looking at other threads in other forums, seems like what sets off imgur more than anything else is porn and gore.

I could never imagine that an NES-er would have any interest at all in porn or gore. [smile]

out of curiosity, when the image does not appear, for testing purposes, could you try the following (in firefox):

open new tab: about:config
search: refererheader

you should see: network.http.sendRefererHeader with a value of 2

modify value to 1
reload page

if i'm not mistaken, this should remove NEshooters as the referer during the image request.
do the images appear?

modify value back to default (2), when testing is done.

That worked, dooshorama. It will save me oodles of pic reloading. Thank you!

I received a response from an Imgur Representative as follows:

Hi there Martin08,

I'd be happy to look into this for you. It looks like that site has been blocked from hotlinking. Can you confirm that no Imgur images are being used outside of the forum? We allow hotlinking on forums, but hotlinked images cannot be used as content on a website, including blog posts, avatars, site elements, sales, and advertising. Please see our terms of service for more info: imgur.com/tos. Sorry for the confusion!

Best,
Isaac K.

And my reply to them was as follows:

Thank you for responding, Isaac.

I can say that I am not using Imgur as content on a website, blog posts, avatars, site elements, sales, or advertising. As a member of the forum, I merely take pictures and offer them for viewing within forum topics.

In no way am I associated with the Administration of Northeastshooters.com, so I cannot confirm that no other Imgur images are being used outside the forum.

It seems that if an Imgur member was violating terms of service, that the particular Imgur user should be restricted, and not the entire website? As I stated in my initial inquiry that I also link pictures on other forums, it is rather inconvenient to use an alternate hosting site for only the Northeastshooters.com forum. I am sure that many other forum members who abide by Imgur Terms of Service might also be inconvenienced by the acts of one or a few who violate the TOS.

It would be greatly appreciated if the matter could be investigated and/or resolved by terminating the account(s) of the violator(s), and allowing the remainder of the rule abiding community to benefit from Imgur services.

Again, thank you for the response and consideration. I look forward to your reply. Thank you.

-Matt Martin

Hope that explains a little, at least. I will post more if any relevant information is conveyed.

I received the same reply, and gave my perspective as the webmaster. Hopefully we can get off their naughty list.

i've read isaac's response 10x. it makes so little sense, i think either me or him is an idiot.

Can you confirm that no Imgur images are being used outside of the forum?
what? to confirm that outside of NES, images are not imgur's?
or is he asking whether your images on imgur are being used on another website? in which case - why would NES get banned for the images being used elsewhere?

and this:
We allow hotlinking on forums, but hotlinked images cannot be used as content on a website
that sounds contradictory. are forums not websites? [banghead]

imgur allows for hotlinking within forum content, but not for use as a CDN for serving things like advertising, website elements, etc. That's what he is referring to as "outside of the forum".

Our ban has been lifted. All of the images (outside of the classified section) should begin working within ~24 hours.

So, if I understand you correctly, this problem has gone away for members posting outside the classified section?

Correct. I unfortunately had to remove imgur links from the classifieds area (and remove existing links) due to a revision of the Imgur Terms of Service. Outside of those forums, everything should be a-ok.

This is great work (applause).

It's not always easy trying to negotiate agreements of this nature. Thank you very much for the time and effort.

It looks to be working via SSL, but not via the standard domain...

I sent them a followup.
