FRESNO, Calif. - A suspect in an arson opened fire Thursday on deputies and a fire investigator trying to serve an arrest warrant, authorities said. Three law-enforcement officers were shot.

The victims were taken to a local hospital. Two officers — a Fresno County sheriff's deputy shot in the side under his armpit and a Reedley police officer wounded in the head — were in critical condition, The Fresno Bee reported.

A third officer, a sheriff's deputy, was shot in the shoulder. His condition was not known, the Bee reported.

A witness, Bret McArron, told KSEE-TV the shooting occurred at a house in an impoverished neighborhood with a lot of mobile homes in the community of Minkler in eastern Fresno County.

The gunman barricaded himself inside the house and fire repeatedly on law enforcement officials, sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice said.

Jim Stone, 46, who lives about 100 feet from the surrounded home, said he was evacuated after the shooting erupted. Stone said he heard what sounded like hundreds of shots.

Arson suspect reportedly opens fire on deputies serving warrant

SANGER, Calif. - A suspect in an arson opened fire Thursday on deputies and a fire investigator trying to serve a warrant, authorities said. One officer was killed and two others wounded, one critically.

The dead officer was identified as a Fresno County sheriff's homicide detective. A Reedley police officer was in critical condition, and another sheriff's deputy was in stable condition.

The man opened fire as officers from multiple agencies were trying to serve a search warrant at his home in the rural community of Minkler in eastern Fresno County, sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice said. The man was being investigated for an arson as well as for shots fired in the neighborhood earlier in the week, authorities said.

The gunman then barricaded himself inside the house and continued firing on law enforcement officials in an ongoing standoff, sheriff's officials said.

It's unclear if any other people were inside the home.

Mary Novack, who runs a convenience store across from the home under siege, said she saw the deputies and a fire official smash down the door of the home after repeatedly demanding someone inside surrender. Then she heard gunfire.

"Oh my god, somebody's going to be dead," Novack recalled thinking at the time.

Jim Stone, 46, who lives about 100 feet from the surrounded home, said he was evacuated after the shooting erupted. Stone said he heard what sounded like hundreds of shots.

Daniel Berlant, a spokesman with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said state fire officials were at the scene but would not say why and referred questions to the sheriff's department.
