Came across this Springfield 5xxxxx. Looks totally original and cartouche stamped 1892. What is unusual is the tiger maple stock. Known history, one owner, for the last 100 years. I've fired it at the range and it delivers. How does one clean up the dirt and grime on the stock without losing the original finish ?

I know I've seen stock work similar to what you're looking for on Mark Novak's Youtube channel - but he designates most videos by gun, not by technique and I can't remember which one. Could have been in any of his rifle or shotgun videos - key title words to look for would be conserve, conservation or restoration.

What I'd try would be 4/0 steel wool or scotchbrite with a non aggressive solvent - alcohol, murphys, danish oil, something light that. A very light scrubbing, not much pressure.

Based on your pic, I'd wipe with a soft only slightly damp cloth then a dry microfiber. LOL, what grime?

If you want to preserve (I would) nothing abrasive, not even steel wool.
