You need to keep that shotgun clean !

Ha. I jes' pour gasoline down my M4's barrel and shake. Turn her upside down to drain. Done. Easy Peasy :p
ar15s can handle quite a bit, but to wash a gentle regular shotgun in benzine or acetone is a bit brutal.
maf sensor cleaner or a brake parts cleaner also works fast.

How else do you get all the mud off?

I've done similar. After you've smoothed the guts of a single action revolver frame, there is metal dust EVERYfrickinwhere. I slather the hell out of them with rubbing alcohol, then drench them in running hot water (water heater at 150 degrees). That's hot enough to evaporate the water before oiling the bore, coating the guts with synthetic red grease, and waxing the exterior. Yeah, I was nervous about the process the first couple times I tried it.

Never thought to use the dishwasher. Only used it for car parts from time to time.

Back when I owned a Mosin after a range trip id pour a couple bottles of tap water on the bolt, chamber and down the barrel. Come home, pour boiling water on the bolt and down the barrel before cleaning it normally. Russians love to salt their ammo.

This. Id use water and ballistol or use some muzzleloader cleaner. Water based. Then hit it with hoppes 9.

Little WD40 and it will be fine.
