Don't worry about this, it's more bullsh!t pseudo-science from headline seekers.

Consciousness is lost the moment blood pressure to the brain falls below some threshold value. There's abundant evidence for this, starting with vasovagal syncope.

I suppose it's remotely possible you may recall events that occurred while you were heart-stopped unconscious, which explains how some victims of cardiac arrest claim to remember what was going on after they were resuscitated. But being dead and knowing it? There is no chance that can happen.

What big medicine should be looking at is the horror they call "brain death," diagnosed by ice water in the ear or a touch on an eyeball. This is 19th century quackery and the result is a daily holocaust of vivisection in our hospitals.

I read something recently describing an experiment where a physician yelled (open your eyes, i think it was) at guillotine victims immediately after decapitation. Apparently, he got responses for up to 30 seconds (with diminishing intensity). That kind of makes sense, given that oxygen depletion isn't instantaneous.

Here's the link to that story.

I don't know how to reconcile this with vasovagal syncope, where one may lose consciousness just by standing up from a seated position.

I suppose you could theorize that the major blood vessels of the neck elastically retract and close as the neck is severed, thereby maintaining blood pressure to the brain for a few seconds.

Here's more if you're so inclined to believe: Lucid Decapitation.

It’s good to know when you die.

Just finished a long conversation about people who are atheists. They fascinate me. Why do they do what they do, if death is the end?

Just re-read Phaedo the other day. Would be good if more people read it.

If I use a double barrel, both eyes will be plastered against the ceiling. Anyway thanks for the kind thought! Jack.

No worries. I'll just cut a double down to 12" and register it with NFA branch on a Form 2. Jack.

My ex wife works the motorcycle infirmary at Mass General. She used to tell me with the hard cases, the comatose, the comas, she just keep telling them throughout her shift that it was ok to die because their lives would be crap even if they came out of it.

She says she was very successful doing that.

There’s a reason why she’s the ex wife brother.

Because I’m not ready to find out if I’m wrong or right. I don’t believe there is anything else, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try and live life as full as I can. I don’t need a book or the threat of eternal damnation to be kind or try to improve situations when I can.

So, you’re an agnostic. Different case. I can sort of understand agnostics.

I'm an atheist. I had this discussion with myself as a teenager. Yes, it's all meaningless in the end but that doesn't mean there's no right or wrong. Also, I figured I might as well shoot for a first class ticket on the train ride to nowhere. Pointless and comfortable beats pointless and miserable.
