Are the firing pins matched by serial number on the P38 as the Lugers are? Any pics?
 
Wartime P38s used the flat style firing pin. They were not serialized. After the war, when the switched over to the P1, they changed the firing pin - as well as some other parts. Also, not serialized.

Was the first p1's still all steel left over frames or .... when they started making guns again did they switch to aluminum frames from the start ? I always forget.
 
IIRC the P1's were all made with lightweight alloy frames. They were named P1 from 1963, earlier Bundeswehr
pistols carried the P38 designation.
From 1975 on the frames were reinforced with a hexagon pin.

Correct. And rubber grips as opposed to bakelite.
