Back in 85 I went to Navy boot camp at Great Lakes and was lucky enough to get assigned to the State Flags presentation unit. It was a great assignment and we practiced right next to the Rifle Presentation unit. While the formations that we had to learn in the State Flag unit was pretty hard and intense, it was nothing compared to what the Rifle Unit had to go through. The practice time they had to put in was huge and it was pretty dangerous. I seen one guy knock himself cold when he missed a transition. I also seen another guy get a nice slice on his temple when he mishandled his rifle as it came back down to him after he threw it straight up in the air. He needed a boat load of stitches.
The practice paid off though. When I was there the State Flags and Rifle presentation units marched in 4 parades. One in downtown Chicago and the other 3 in the local suburbs. When the rifles where flying and we were marching around them the crowds would go wild. Ahhh the good ol days
