I've seen many threads of how people should carry everywhere because they never really know when they'll need a firearm. I can't disagree with that logic... however there are MANY places/reasons I can't carry. Here are just a few- are there any that I'm missing?

Schools- I do a fair amount of activity with my kids- in and around schools

Beaches- No thunderwear for me.. not practical

Tennis, soccer, bike riding- as well as to and from- even a Glock isn't going to cut it on the courts or on the soccer field

Yard/house work- I sweat so much I'd make the Glock plastic rust.. plus it's uncomfortable

WORK- just can't happen... not my choice...plus I travel a lot to see clients.

Not making excuses.. it's just not that easy.

when you're at work do you leave your gun at home or do you carry it in a locked box in your car so that you can have it if you go somewhere after work?

Secured areas of airports.

Lockups of police stations.

Jails, prisons, and other houses of correction.

Courthouses.

Secured areas of state and federal buildings.

Military bases.

...the list goes on and on...

I wear big, baggy trunks with pockets. My 642 rides just fine in there. Of course, when I'm on the beach, I'm usually camped out right in front of my truck, so I can store it in there if necessary (locked in a container).

And, as you store it, you double-check to ensure it's unloaded, right M1911? (of course you did!)

Well that brings up an interesting point... To answer your question correctly first- sometimes... like if I need to leave early to a match.

However, I am never comfortable leaving my car unattended for long periods of time with my firearm in it. I guess I'm concerned with losing my LTC if the car gets stolen or gets broken into. You KNOW that would make me an "unsuitable" person.

There must be a thousand and one vendors out there ready to supply you with a strongbox that you can weld into your car's trunk or the cargo area of your SUV.

True... I guess I'm being overly cautious. They can still get the car... not that there aren't better vehicles to steal.

Welding is a great idea, but be sure the welder knows how to match thick guage metal to thin guage sheet metal.

I personally prefer the 'drill and bolt' method. so long as the nuts are INSIDE the lock box and you reinforce the sheetmetal with fender washers or plate steel, it's very tough to remove short of cutting torch. Also, a tac weld on the nut, or a thread locker is a great idea.

DO NOT trust the factory glovebox or console, the locks on those things are little more than toddler proof. Check out Tuffy Security products for some really unique lock boxes. I had one on my Jeep that I could secure stuff under the hood.

I might downsize to even a .32, but I'd rarely be caught without. And yes, I've done thousands of miles on a bicycle comfortably armed in coolmax shirts and lycra shorts.

I've even taken a swim. Cleaning later sucked, but no harm.

I saw this lock box one time, and I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, or what site it was on. It was a custom sized insert for the under seat storage area on the Dodge Ram. You basically had to take the center front seat and console out to put the box in, and it was made of steel that you could bolt to the frame, or simply re-assemble the seat and console once it was in, and it couldn't be removed.

Wish I could find that again...

Yeah I saw that one...

In the new Ram's, there's an option for an extra storage compartment under the front middle seat. It flips up, to reveal a bin that is large enough to fit a 12 pack of beer. The strong box I saw, filled the entire space, and was pretty secure.

I work in NYS and it is a 40 mile trip one way, about 30miles into NYS. I've thought of mounting a "secret box" in my vehicles and leaving my guns in them illegally but what if I get into an accident and my vehicle gets towed?

As far as I can tell I just can't have my guns with me 90% of the time. I do carry on weekends usually and sometimes if I go out at night and stop at my house before doing so.

Can't get a NR license in NYS. Which really sucks when you live so close to the border.

Yeah.... I guess my point is simply this: Even if you want to ccw a lot.. there are many, many places (at least with my life) where it's just not feasible.

No, the post office is not a no-no to properly licensed individuals. This is perhaps the most common piece of misinformation out there.

If you have an accident in NY, then you were on your way to Indiana, weren't you? [wink] Since you've got your MA LTC, and Indiana recognizes it, then FOPA covers your trip.

the local post office annex has a sign up saying that it's unlawful to carry in the office unless your a postal inspector(something along those lines)

also at packing.org,it still just says that any place used by the courts are off limits to carrying..(not sure if the site is fully updated)

The signs in Post Offices only quote part of the law, omitting the exemption for carrying firearms for legal purposes, which causes no end of confusion.

Title 18, United States Code, Sec. 930. - Possession of firearms and dangerous weapons in Federal facilities

(a) Except as provided in subsection (d), whoever knowingly possesses or causes to be present a firearm or other dangerous weapon in a Federal facility (other than a Federal court facility), or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 1 year, or both.
...
(d) Subsection (a) shall not apply to -
...
3. the lawful carrying of firearms or other dangerous weapons in a Federal facility incident to hunting or other lawful purposes.

IOW, if there's nothing in state or local law that would make it illegal for you to be carrying a firsarm there, and if you're nor doing so for some criminal purpose, the regulation doesn't apply to you.

We MUST stay aware that this forum and this question/answer thread is NOT just about MA!

From the cc.com forum, I have learned that USPO carry is indeed illegal in a number of states, but it is due to their state laws, NOT the sign that intentionally mis-represents Fed Law and is posted in every USPO.

For MA, it is perfectly legal to CCW in the USPO as long as you have an unrestricted LTC-A.

I can't address this for ME or NH (the other posts here on this topic).

Is there any case law one way or another?

There's nothing in Mass case law, because there's nothing to charge a person with in the first place. If they don't have the proper license, then it's illegal under state law, and therefore under federal law as well. If they are properly licensed, then there's nothing with which to charge them, except possibly the usual "disturbing the peace" because somebody saw your firearm.

Ken,

From a few other cases I have seen and read about I'd hate to depend upon your reasoning. Without something to back me up.

And I'm not sure that I have the financial resources to be a test case.

Tell you what, I will keep on doing it, and if I get charged, I'll let Darius tell you all about how he put the smack down on the local PD for wrongful arrest! [smile]
