Why Do I Need a Rifle? by Larry Mudgett (Gunsite)

Great read !

This line stands out:
civilization is much more fragile than you may imagine

Anyone with any doubts as to the validity of the above statement needs a reality check.

I'd also have to say the author validates my sig line.

Why do I need a handgun? To fight my way back to the rifle I should have *never* left behind! No Patriot would be caught without a rifle for every member in his household.

Excellent Read.

This is a great read and this man is one of the more intelligent writers on the subject I have come across, thank you for posting this. Something I noted which particularly resonated throughout this article was that fact that 1.) this man is apparently on the 'right' side of the law if and when SHTF, and this gives him a greater assurance of being able to reasonably protect himself and his assets, and 2.) For those of us who are not in the law enforcement capacity, if the government does decide to initiate a plan to seize weapons and/or stored food we have fewer options than someone with the type of background and law enforcement status of this man.

I think that for these reasons it is particularly difficult for the common citizen, looking to protect his/her family and home knowing that often (as per below) the deadliest form of violence is almost always initiated by the Government. Most LE personnel I know and, from this forum from what I can tell, are very level-headed and astute to these issues, but we live in a society of mass unconsciousness where it does not take much to convince a government paid employee that if he does not comply his livelihood and ability to take care of his own are on the line.

The paragraph that really struck me:

"The history of the 20th century could be summarized in a few sentences. 100 million civilians ( historical estimates range from 55 million to nearly 200 million) were first disarmed and then murdered by their own governments, usually with the cooperation of their own military. 100 million civilians murdered in China, Germany, Poland, Russia, Armenia, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Rwanda, Ukraine, Uganda and other countries and nearly all of these governments who committed genocide were socialist or Communist. These kinds of things could not happen here. Americans are somehow different from people living in other countries. Perhaps, but let us take a critical look at our own history."

I would have thought that asking the question "why do I need a rifle?" would fall in the same category as asking "why do a need a penis?".

If you have to ask - you shouldn't be allowed to have one.

I for one am very happy not everyone has a penis.

But yes, almost everyone should have a rifle.

"An Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) attack by North Korea"

Extreme hypothetical

"A world wide crop failure could cause food riots and looting on a scale never seen before."

I guess it's possible. It seems that he assumes that you have enough food to last a couple years and will only be using the rifle for protection of that food and your family.

Makes me think of Rawlings the author of Patriots.

Either TEOTWAWKI or not. Like that guy from the Argentina economic meltdown said (in some words) the world must have really gone to hell before you can carry a rifle down the street.

I believe the author said the World can really go to hell in a matter of minutes. But the prep work for civil turbulence is well under way.

Hemmingway ( ? ) :

Q. How's you go broke ?
A : Two ways ; gradually ... and then all of a sudden.

I finally had a chance to watch that movie "The Road" recently.

It's an entire movie based around the concept of "why I should have had a rifle" - if you ask me.

If the dope and his kid had had rifles - instead of a revolver with 2 rounds, most of the situations they were in would have been totally different.

If somebody asks you: "why do I need a rifle" - first sit them down and have them watch "The Road" - and then have them read the Midgett article. If they need additional reading have them spend some time delving into the actual state of our economy.

If all of that doesn't work tell them to fast forward to the part in "The Road" where he finds the people locked in the root cellar - and explain to them that will be their new life if they don't smarten up.

I'd rather the general sheeple population remain just that.

i think the only problem in there is that these sheeple will be voting to make you less scary.

i do think at least semi-organized neighbors with guns is important in surviving some sort of end of the world event. a single house, well defended, is still pretty vulnerable in the long term. a suburban neighborhood ready and able to defend it's neighbors is damn dangerous.

or the scene when, in an effort to protect his son, the father prepares to kill him with the gun to spare his son any harm in the hands of those that would most certainly do so…

If you haven't watched The Road yet you should rent it...makes me want to go out a buy a great pair of binoculars - just in case.

Agreed. Not only extremely hypothetical, the EMP required to have a continental scale that would be required for a total US effect is well beyond any prescribed NK capabilities. However, they could have regional capability that would cause as much havoc if you happen to be in the region.

It wouldn't take a world wide crop failure to cause food riots. A regional crop failure that resulted in a doubling of basic food prices or a contamination scare could drive a lot of areas into food riots. People who are "barely making ends meet" would suddenly be unable to afford food legally and starvation will force people to take risks they would never take normally.

True enough, but it may only take the right kind of spark before you need one in your house for a few days. His main argument is that a person's local "world" can shift from peaceful to violent chaos in a few hours and a pistol has very little value against mob mentallity.

As a guy who owns rifles and has way too many magazines (yes, you can have too many), I probably shouldn't be the one talking, but the type of situation that would require a rifle is really far-fetched. A rifle is a long distance weapon and/or numerous opponents weapon. So we are talking about 100+ yards and 5+ BG. Can you imagine a situation where you could “legally” shoot a bunch of people at 150 yards? Think about it.

Now, if we come to live in such a world a rifle will not be enough. You will need a team of people/neighbors/friends to defend the communal position. No offense, but anyone thinking that in the world like that their AR/AK and ammo (w/LULA [grin]) will suffice is kidding himself.

I love when modern drama queens talk about EMP. Why do they always talk about the world post EMP and not the world post nuclear war or bio attack? The reason is simple, the former allows them to buy gear and feel good about themselves, and the latter doesn't.

Yes, I prep, but only for realistic situations. I am way more concerned with the “Argentina” type of a world than I am about anything even remotely close to “The Road”. Is AR mandatory to survive or even prosper in Argentina? No.

But rifles are cool. So any pistol owner should buy one, or two, or ten. [wink]

I have been around a long time and seen a lot of things and I don't recall ever seeing such an unstable atmosphere in this country with regard to our debt, our economy, and our general well being and safety. Our government, from local to national, has become vile and corrupt. Our elected leaders seem more concerned with lining their own pockets than with the preservation of liberty and our constitution.

I remember how quickly the riots began and the devastation that resulted. I really enjoyed reading the Mudgett article and I agree with most of what he says. I don't fear an EMP as much as I do the collapse of our economy. I don't have enough money to invest in gold or silver, so the hard commodities I have been investing in have been AR's and ammo.

In the event of a total SHTF situation, I may not make it through it, but I guarantee I will outlast a lot of others. I don't plan on bugging out anywhere. I will remain at home. On a good day you can't get anywhere now with a normal situation. I can just imagine a real SHTF scenario and our highways.

I'm heading for the bunker now to finish building the other 4 AR's I have started. I will be working on them behind the cases of canned hams and creamed corn.
