I have recently been transferred from MA to VA and have sold all of my compliant guns. To celebrate, and because I have a large cache of cash that is off the books from the fiancé, I thought I would get a 1911. I want your opinion! The options are as follows...

1) Springield TRP with rail- I love this 1911, however it is a bit heavy but one I have been "jonesing" after for a long time. I like how it comes with tacpac, night sights, bull barrel...

2) Kimber Super Match 2- Top of the line Kimber, comes with an accuracy guarantee and I have read and heard great things about its accuracy. Downside is price given that it has a few MIM parts.

3) Wilson Combat CQB- Obviously more than the Kimber and a lot more than the TRP, however, I have fired one and love it- certainly my "holy grail" 1911. I wasn't originally even really looking at one (wanted to stick with a high end production 1911), however, for about 700$ more than the Kimber, this is a reality and I'd gladly wait a bit longer/ put a bit more money into it. Again, it is twice as much as the Springfield.

What should I go with? Right now, I have a 1967 Colt govt model and am looking for a range king/ CQB 1911... Not for carry etc... Thoughts?

That was an easy question: get the Wilson.

Even given the price difference? I'm not saying I can't make the Wilson happen, but, buying one of the others (namely the TRP) would be easy and leave me unaccounted for money to buy other toys in the immediate future...

Have DW Vbob. It has been nothing but reliable for me. I think I have had it almost 2 years now. Not sure how many rounds though, probably only 2-3000? I don't shoot as often as I should :(

Of your 3 I would buy the Wilson. 2 tone, full size wilson is my grail gun.

Look at the Desert Eagle 1911's too. Had a chance to fondle one at Acme recently and was rather impressed. Price point is pretty good too. They have four models (see them here) ranging from just under $760 to just under $1100 (MSRP)...

I have a new Dan Wesson Specialist. After shooting only a couple of magazines, the slide is jamming up hard. The slide is locking back but the slide lock is not engaged. I had to free up the slide with a hard smack from behind on the bench. After field stripping, I found abnormal wear on the rails on the slide. I took it home and inspected it some more and found several issues. The barrel link seems be poorly fitted. The barrel hood to breech face clearance seems excessive. The wear on the top of the barrel and inside of the slide seems excessive for only having shot a couple of mags. The disconnector seems poorly fitted and doesn't operate smoothly. Also there appears to be abnormal wear on the slide rails. see pics.

Wow, how did they do with the repairs? You should have refused the gun at the shop

It's only $3500. A kidney should cover it.

After two shots, my brand new Specialist galled up and the slide and frame were completely stuck together. I had to use a rubber mallet to get them apart. I properly cleaned and lubed the gun before shooting and this was the result.

After spending two weeks trying to get someone from customer service to answer a phone, i finally got it returned and fixed. It looks like they cleaned everything up. I immediately took it to David Santurri and had him fit a .460 Rowland kit to it and make it right. I had no issues after that point.

Needless to say, I wasn't very impressed. All of my other DW pistols were bought used- and I would never buy another new one again.

Get one Custom built by Greg Derr. Everything you want, nothing you don't.

Which Wesson do you like?

+2 on the Dan Wesson.

Part of me wants to suggest that you "dare to spend less" and get the RZ45. Its a super nice gun, but only comes in stainless. It looks as good as, is fitted as well as, and shoots as well as the more expensive Dan Wessons.

+3 on the Les Baer Premier II as a range gun. Very traditional, but mine is scary accurate and very very reliable. I run it with my handloads and it has not malfunctioned on me in at least a year. (5000ish rounds) And that time I must have short stroked the press because the round was out of spec in length.

I have owned Wilsons, Nighthawks, Ed Browns, Dan Wessons and Les Baers as well as a Brazos Limited gun. If I had to pick the best all around 1911 for the money it would be the Premier II. It shoots as well as the Wilsons, and better than the Nighthawks and Browns, for much less money.

The going rate for a Premier II is about $1600. Not much more than any other high quality 1911.

thanks for for the info Don! I will look into it.

The RZ45 is very good for the price point. In fact, probably the best 1911 out there for the money. I would love an Ed Brown or a Les Baer but you pay a lot of money for very little additional functionality. If I had all the money in the world, I would scoop one up for bragging rights. But I would prefer to put my spending cash into M1A's and Garands. So the RZ45 is the perfect tool. Alternatively, the Springfield Loaded is pretty nice for less money. They have a better warranty than Dan Wesson but a less quality weapon to begin with.

If anyone is seriously considering an Infinity, I can bring a few out to Hopkinton for you to check out.

As another plus, the company is filled with dog lovers from the president on down. When you walk into that place, it can be hard to tell if you've stepped into a kennel or a gun factory.

One dog that hangs out at the factory was adopted by the president's son (who runs a big chunk of the business) because it had a cleft lip and was going to be put down by the breeder - so he adopted it, paid for surgery, and gave it a forever home.

Les Baer all the way. Way less $ than Wilson and every bit as good. Read what guys with Wilsons and all the other big names have to say about the Les Baer. I've got two and it's all true. That said, they all work pretty darn well. The Les Baer just shoots tighter groups and never jambs. Oh yes, and did I mentioned it costs less .

And if you want the colt CQBP to shoot as well as a Dan Wesson (same price or less), you will have to spend $600 after the fact.

Colt has become the brand to get if you want to collect 1911s, not if you want to shoot them.
