That type of debate doesn't exist anymore. No needles or opinion will be moved. Commentary belongs to the trolls of the world. If you want to make a good case for your opinion start a blog but be prepared for the counterstrike should it happen.

To be honest, OP, I think Darth hits it.

The implication is that you do your "debating" in person, not on the web. I work with a lot of liberals too, and everyone's much more openminded in person than they'd ever be on the internet. VetteGirl's right. What happens on forums these days isn't really debate.

Doesn't exist. And 95% of liberals are NPC robots, so have fun with that. The only people worth engaging are most certainly not wasting time on DU or wherever.... even then, in real life there are a lot of robots. The only thing that will prevent the destruction of this country is the wonkies, wobblies and otherwise uninterested or uninvolved.... engaging wonkies is one thing, with actual labeled liberals it's usually a waste of time.

Of course one other problem these days is with the amount of dousing of political bullshit in mainstream media most average people don't even want to talk about it anymore....

Take a Logic, Reasoning, and Persuasion class - or some such Philosophy class like it - at a PUBLIC college or university. Participate in class. I say public because theoretically you still have freedom of speech that you don’t have at a private institution. Perhaps you’d like to sue! (I wish I had the money!!!)

I graduated in 1990. Even then I had flak from the liberal students when debating in class. Great fun. But back then even my liberal professors were tolerant of a quality presented argument. Not sure now...but you sound up for this sort of challenge!!! [devil2][devil][angry2][cheers]

A big issue for me is something Reggie Watts called 'binary di-opposition'. As soon as I learn that you're different from me, I not only label you as that and oppose myself, but I immediately consider ALL of your positions to be the opposite of mine, like you're my enemy. This is the blight on humanity that we need to overcome. That things aren't as simple as black and white, right and left. Good ideas are good ideas, regardless of whether they can attributed and 'owned' by a political body.

The days of civil discourse are over, hard right wing and almost all Liberals have forgotten the concept of listening to other peoples opinions and maybe getting a different perspective while not agreeing with it.

What is that old saying " you never learn anything from someone you agree with"

case in point, as a libertarian leaning conservative I espoused a get the government out of business and let capitalism work, to which my brother responded, if you let big business and big money run rampant with no oversight or control they will do what is best for them and their pocket every time to the detriment of society. After pondering that point I came to the conclusion that it had some validity.

But in these troubled times, and make no mistake about it this country is on its way to bad times if we can't find some common ground, everyone responds to a difference of opinion poorly and sometimes violently. ANTIFA is in my opinion no better than the KKK of old, rampaging thru the streets with their faces covered attacking those whom they hate.

I've often been faced with this arguement as well. We already have a legal standard for how far we'll allow a private company to do this, the Antitrust laws.

Arguing on FB is like wrestling a pig. In the end, you’ll be exhausted, you won nothing and you realize the pig likes it.

I think the other problem is, on most "political" forums the attendance is sort of self selecting, people willing to antagonize are not going to be swayed, etc. The pool already is filled with steaming piss and turds and when anyone "reasonable" or "rational " shows up they get a whiff and turn away.

The problem is the shit two party system promotes this behaviour by party "minders" shitting on anyone for straying from the platform, etc. Guys like Rand Paul can withstand it because he doesn't get elected by the machine, but most can't.....so they all suck for it because the minders tell them they won't get snywhere in politics unless they play the party song....

Corporatism bullshit could be crushed, too, by leveling the tax playing field etc. Regulatory burden suffocates small and medium businesses in this country....

There is not a shred of logic in any of their arguments. Everything is based upon emotions and what "feels good" at the time. This is in part how their special powers of moral relativism become strong.

Put on a MAGA hat and walk into a bar in Cambridge. I like to troll and debate the libs on NPR. I'll see a story with a comment section with over 2k comments. All of them are Trump is literally Hitler. If you get in early a lot of them will respond to you.

I'm in if someone wants to set up a NES meet up there.

I enjoy a good debate or argument in the traditional sense, not the trolling BS that goes on today.

You know what really gets a liberal's goat? Keeping them on subject. Every time they attempt to veer off course to avoid a losing subject, bring it back. "Hang on, we're talking about the impact of cars on so- called climate change and now you're talking about turtles choking on plastic bags." (Trigger warning: "so-called climate change" will trigger responses that may cause hearing damage)

You have to stay vigilant because they shuck and jive all over the place. Once you get the hang of it it's trivial to win the debate because they tend to have zero depth of knowledge and once they've exhausted the headlines and Trevor Noah / Jimmy Kimmel quotes, they're toast.

That’s like asking which store should I go to, to get a winning Powerball ticket or which Doctor should I go to, to have my manhood embiggened.

    It just ain’t happening.

I wasted a lot of time in years past debating liberal friends/ friends of friends on social media. Mainly Facebook. At some point I decided it isn’t worth my time or the spike in blood pressure anymore. There are many more enjoyable things to do with my free time (which is becoming increasingly scarce) than doing that never ending, exhausting dance that is arguing against liberal logic.

My hat is off to you however, for continuing the good fight. I just don’t have the energy or patience for it anymore. Nowadays doing my part includes getting as many on-the-fence people as I can interested in the 2A world (like helping out at WOT).
IMHO there is nothing more impactful you can do than steering someone away from progressive idealism and into the liberty-loving mindset. ;)
