When did Mass. initiate the training requirement to obtain a firearm permit ?

Does anyone know when this requirement was first made a pre-requisite to obtain a firearms license ? I'm old enough to recall that I did not need to do this for my first license, around the mid-1960's.

I'd say that it's not a "training" requirement, but an "education" requirement, as there is not a live fire component to all approved courses.

But, ScouterRick is right, it's 1998. When everything became better, for us all......

I'm old enough to recall that I did not need to do this for my first license, around the mid-1960's.

And if you had an LTC or FID in effect when the Act went into effect in '98, there isn't any training requirement.

Correct: G.L. ch. 140, sec. 131P (in part):

"Section 131P. (a) Any person making application for the issuance of a firearms identification card under section 129B, a Class A or Class B license to carry firearms under section 131 or 131F or a permit to purchase under section 131A who was not licensed under the provisions of this chapter on June 1, 1998 shall, in addition to the requirements set forth in said section 129B, 131, 131A or 131F, submit to the licensing authority a basic firearms safety certificate . . . ."
