what to carry in mexico

Lots of U.S. cash for bribes and such.

Truer words were never said.

I recall (~20 yrs ago) a DEA agent addressing one of my police groups telling us that the Mexican authorities would sell them out in a heartbeat and they were always looking over their shoulder, could never count on whose side the Federales were on, etc.

The travel industry and the United States Government have got to make it clear to the Mexico Department of Tourism that Mexico needs to make improving their safety standards a priority. And that failure to do so will create a serious decline in their tourist industry.

Most sheep are perfectly happy traveling to the all-inclusives in Mexico, never go outside the gates unless on a tour run by the all-inclusive resort, and they "KNOW" that nothing can never happen to them!

We have good (anti) friends who are like this. They go to Mexico 3-4x/year for vacation, will not eat Mexican food (even at home) . . . won't eat anything that they don't regularly eat no matter where they are, KNOW that it is perfectly safe everywhere they travel, etc. There is no convincing people like this! As for me, Mexico has always been on my "NEVER" list and I refuse to go anywhere where I feel it is unsafe to mingle with the natives or go out to eat at places that natives eat at!

Lol. You do realize that the cartels down there are full of ex-special forces and are much better armed and trained than the military?

Of course, if we decriminalize marijuana and cocaine all of Mexico's problems go away overnight. But drugs are bad so let's not even consider that option.

I have a Mexican friend who was trying to convince me to move down there. Apparently it gets safer as you get further from the border. But I'll take his word for it on that...

they are really missing out, then. Eating local down there yields some of the best food I've had in this world. Giardia be damned.

one of the things I've noticed in that country is that when you are identified as a "bread bringer," you are largely left alone. Drug Dealer Gonzalez may be a bad, bad man. And he may have intentions of kidnapping and raping the crap out of your wallet... but when he risks the alienation of a corporation that employs 1/2 of his extended family, he thinks twice.

You go to work down there and you have a limited respect if you're directly responsible for job creation. Which is funny- because even the lowest of the low "thugs" down there are grateful for such offerings.

Meanwhile in America, the happily employed will spit and shit on your feet when you try to work with the unionized labor camps. And, supposedly, they claim to be civilized folk.

I also vacation sometimes down there and have never found problems. But this is coming from a world traveler that knows when a situation is pushing too many blocks out of the Jenga Game of OHSHIT.

It is not what to carry, but what to wear. You want to wear a BATF shirt, that way the bad guys will think you are just there to sell guns.

I have been down to Cancun/Play del Carmen a bunch of times, never had any issues but always travelled with a group of 6-8 people.

Travel to Mexico? No thanks.

On that I find we are 100% in agreement [laugh]

Actually, there are relatively few places I'd care to go. Been to Paris - no need to go back. Would like to visit Ireland, Australia and maybe Germany and Italy. It would be cool to walk on the Great Wall. That's about it for places of interest outside the USA.

it's not all that bad. I've been down there many times over the last few years and my brother is currently working in and around Mexico City. People that over-react about how scary it is down there either don't know what they are talking about, or are giant pussies.

You can usually avoid all trouble by using common sense, which everyone usually has. Now, if you are a America Homebody that lives in suburbia/the sticks and think that a trip into Boston is "risky" or "scary," then I don't know what to tell you. Burn your plane tickets and dig a bomb shelter to live in the rest of your days?

this.

These folks are so stuck in their ways wrt food that even when we go to the buffet at Mohegan Sun, I can't convince either of them to take ONE of something they have never eaten before to try it out!! I've given up.

I really enjoy trying new foods, going to out of the way places (as long as I feel safe), etc. when in foreign countries . . . but smart enough not to venture into dangerous areas.

To me an "all inclusive" where you can't safely walk outside the gate is the same as being in a prison, albeit with fancy amenities!

this. smart.

i actually know a girl who was kidnapped in mexico. she managed to escape and nothing nasty happened to her while she was in captivity--but still. kidnapped in mexico. not what you ever want to hear.

I'm actually not even talking about kidnapping. While that is of course a possibility, it's not extremely likely that it will happen to you, and if it does, you won't be carrying enough money on you to deal with it.

This is more like what I'm talking about. I have heard several stories, many of which were from friends of mine that are Mexican (naturalized U.S. citizens) that still have all their family in Mexico, about Mexican cops stopping American citizens and basically pulling the typical "contempt of cop" BS act, except your choice is cough up $50-$100 or go to jail. One buddy of mine that grew up in San Diego and went to TJ all the time eventually started carrying cash in his socks specifically to pay off the Mexican cops. It isn't nearly as common in the resort destinations, but it's actually pretty typical everywhere else.

There are SO many other places where one can have a hell of a vacation, it boggles the mind why anyone would want to go to Mexico for that.

I have heard that one of the best defenses is wasp poison. The aerosol shoots a sold spray that is good up to 20 feet and you do not recover from a shot to the face without medical attention. Available at your local hardware store.

Almost a decade ago some local TV reporter interviewed a high school PE teacher who, with no background in chemistry or biology or any actual expertise in self defense, said that wasp spray is better than any commercial defense sprays.

Ten million chain emails later, and "wasp spray" is an internet legend and that old PE teacher is a self-defense expert.

There's been absolutely no evidence, testing, or any outside investigation that's suggested that Val's not full of shit.

Where are you going in Mexico? The border towns are where the most serious and scary stuff is happening... places on the periphery can be very safe. For example, I just got back from my honeymoon in the Cancun area last month and we had a great time and didn't limit ourselves to the hotel area (we went to see some ruins a couple hours from Cancun and went in to downtown Cancun to explore, too) If you're traveling to that area, I can give you some advice... if you're going elsewhere in Mexico, then not so much. Good luck!

going for a week long vacation in mexico
i know i wont be able to pack my rod, does anyone have any thoughts on what i can bring?
i couldnt easily find any info on extendable batons and knives seem like theyre okay if theyre under 3".
i might just have to pick myself up a 4D-cell maglight

My fondest memory of Mexico is coming across a rather good porno that included a couple of outdoor shots, enough to identify the hotel the film was done at.

If I ever do vacation in Mexico I'm going to stay at that hotel if I can remember the name of it.

Had a relative just in Acapulco on business, and they would not let him out of his hotel room at night!

Spent 2 weeks on the Mexican Riviera 3 years ago at an all inclusive and it was great and cheap. Excursions during the day were fine, but you could tell something was up--lots of security at the entrance to each resort, police checkpoints on the highways, armored convoys on the roads, etc. Wandering around in town late at night was not advised. Wandering around Cancun was not too bad though--good bullfights.
