What is the most you should ever pay for a standard WASR 10?

I got mine for $500, but I think the going rate these days is $600. If you can find them NIB for less, go for it. Or look around in the classifieds, you might get a good deal on a package.

you wont find that price anymore. WASR's are way over priced right now and i would suggest dropping a few hundred more on a better type.

I've seen a lot of people say $400, but I am yet to find a place that will sell one that cheap.

You asked what I would pay for one, $400 is it because they are crap rifles. Have no idea were you could get one for that amount but if I had one it would live in the bed of a truck right next to some shovels where it belongs.

In the past I've seen them as low as $300 with two high cap mags, and as high as over $800 when the Obama scare happened. Right now around $500 seems to be fair.

My extra 2₵, Wasr 10's are considered the bottom of the barrel when it comes to AK's, but they still run and I have still seen fewer problems with them then average AR's. If you just want an AK and don't care about anything else, then buy one. If you want something nicer without paying our your nose, look for a decent used SAR-1 or M70.

FWIW, I am not an AK guru. I have only owned three, this is just my opinion.

I paid $500 in the middle of the Obama panic. Fairly typical poor wood and metal finish. Mechanically has worked fine. If your looking for one for $400 shoot me a pm but in the interest of full disclosure I would most likely turn around and buy an arsenal brand AK or build one myself like you should probably do instead of buying a wasr

what is a better brand/type of ak?

Polytech is the cream of the crop. They are built to much higher standards than all other AK's. The PreBan models are extremely rare in this state. If you find one expect to pay $1,500-$1,900. Modern versions like Arsenal, Saiga and some Yugo's are all better quality than a (Romanian)WASR10.

The dimples are there to help guide and hold the 30 rnd mags. WASRs do not have them because they were not originally built to use 30 rnd mags. Someone had to go in with a grinder and open up the mag well in order to fit a 30 rnd mag. WASRs are sort of like a kit car version of a real sports car. Someone took parts from something else and in a garage put them together to look the car you really wanted, but didn't want to pay for. The quality can vary a bit depending on who put it together, but even at the best they are not the real thing. Having said that, I do own one and for what it is, it is a lot of fun. bought it back when they were $400 at most all day long. Not sure I would drop $600 on one.

I paid $475 brand new about 2 months ago.

whats reasonable for a better than a wasr ak?

depends what you are looking at. Is it preban? Expect to pay $1k+

Is it a MAK90? Expect to pay north of $500 but under $1k in MA.

deals can be found. You just have to look. MAK90's go for dogshit in free states. In MA gun shops, they go for a lot more.

I built an AK for $200. It's no beauty queen, but it's accurate as hell and "has dimples." Child please.

I paid $369 for mine at Four Seasons four or five years ago and watched them go up close to 100% in the following years. I traded it for an AR upper a few months ago. Its a fun gun to bang around, dead nuts reliable, but not very accurate. I think what I paid is about what they are worth.

and still overpriced. [laugh]

I paid $550 ish for mine a year ago and see them now going for $600. I like the WASR and have had no problems with it at all. It can't be a PoS if it goes bang everytime I pull the trigger and hits a 3 inch group at 100m with iron sights.

Yeah, I might just hold off on an AK. Sounds like the WASR's aren't really overly great, and the ones that are better, art $1,000+ in MA. Maybe if I move to a free state I'll save up for a Polytech... Hmmm.
