A knife amnesty has begun across the UK meaning all bladed instruments can be handed in without fears of reprisal.

In recent weeks, promising teenage footballer Kiyan Prince was killed outside his northwest London school while volunteer policewoman Nisha Patel-Nasri was fatally knifed outside her home in the capital.

The amnesty, the first for ten years, spans the next five weeks and is being backed by police forces throughout England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Scotland is running its own amnesty concurrently....

Is that located in the same building as the Ministry of silly Walks?

Yes, I believe it is..

They'd better be licensed and properly trained though. A chap could poke someones eye out (or genital region), with an umbrella if not careful.

"offensive weapons - including kitchen knives"

"Government proposals include raising the age at which people can legally purchase them from 16 to 18 giving teachers power to search pupils for knives at school."

"Antoinette Rodney, whose 15-year-old son Kieran Rodney-Davis was stabbed to death in the street in Fulham, west London in June 2004, said: 'The previous knives amnesty did not save my son and nothing has changed since. Knife crime on the streets of Britain is as bad as it ever was.' "

" 'The current knives amnesty will do nothing to make the streets safer and is being used as a diversion from tackling knife crime head on.' "

[rolleyes] Please post under 2 reasons never to vacation in Iraq thread. Or England. Don't know which country has less personal freedom. One that openly says, "you can't wear shorts or drink beer" or one that is just a few years away...

Great observation!

this was on the news constantly when I was over in Ireland. The whole thing is pretty silly. There was a couple of stabbings amoungst youngsters and they're making it a national issue. They already have a law against carrying a blade, so I don't know what this is for other than to look like they're doing something about it.

There was an article a few years back about a guy who was discovered to be in possession of three knives. Turns out that he installed carpets, which as even an English fool knows requires frequent cutting. The judge accepted that he needed a knife for his work, and grudgingly accepted the logic of having a spare, but drew the line at having another spare in his car. Last I heard, the guy was doing 5-10. [rolleyes]

When the Domestic Violence laws were first introduced in New Jersey, part of the requirements were to remove any "Weapons" from the home if a DV complaint was filed. No one could give up an exact explaination for what they considered a weapon. We always have many knives, sometimes bow & arrows, etc. around the home......I don't think they ever did come up with a definition. Normally common sense would work but when you are dealing with the law and a sue happy society, you never know...

Look! Somebody managed to us "common sense" and "law" in the same sentance. Who would have thought it possible?

Protect your loved ones!....

Sadly, this isn't a joke. [thinking]

"It is reported that 50% of people in London are worried about security and sleep with some form of self-defence to hand, for use against intruders.

The 'Safe Bedside Table' has a removable leg that acts as a club and a top that doubles as a shield for self-defence. This is for people who are willing to take on an intruder, providing an extra sense of security whilst in bed".

They'll be coming around to confiscate the unlicensed bedside tables next in the UK. It's for the children! [rolleyes] [puke2]

Forget the tables! Take a look at the sort of things some Londoners have been stockpiling in their homes in case of armed break-ins:
