Well it looks like I’m escaping Boston.

After almost 13 year up here, I got a separation package in Aug. Will be moving to Philly before the end of the year. I’m originally from the suburbs of Philly and will be closer to a lot of my friends and family, but it will be rough on the kids (both in High School) and especially my daughter who is really enjoying her experience at Boston Latin School… But overall it should be a good deal for the family, more money and lower cost of living. PA is moving from Red to Purple but still no Assault Weapons or Mag bans, no roster, or duty to retreat, a state preempt law that keeps the big cities in line.

Wish me luck!

Good luck! There are some nice burbs outside of Philly. For sure PA is a way better state for 2A laws. Also I think with all the leftist influence Boston will be on the decline for quality of life. Your kids will adjust, and they will get a broader frame of reference for their understanding of US society. I find MA and Boston in particular to be very insular.

are there? dunno, i would not live there, but overall in PA there are plenty of nice smaller towns.
same as pulling kids from high school - not really the best of ideas, but, life happens, of course.

Good luck on the move, glad you're getting out of MA. Philly is on my list of cities I hate though. [smile]
I understand, but it’s a good job offer and with all my health issues it’s nice have all the big medical institutions. Getting older (56) and the job market is not kind to old techies.

I was in Philly for a few Sox games back in 0-something. Downtown Philly in 20xx was like downtown Boston in 1978. Like IDENTICAL! It was frightening.

Funniest thing I saw was this little-people pimp and his incredibly tall 'tute. Mid-day. I stopped and laughed my ass off. The locals thought it was just another Friday lunchtime.

I guess some places just look the same no matter what. Midtown Manhattan. Those stores there looked like they were scamming you in the 80's and 90's and my last trip last February. The signage is different. But the "we're here to F you over as fast as possible" vibe was still coming right through. It was uncomfortable and sad.

Meh, kids can adapt. I went to high-school in 2 different countries.

It makes for a great college essay if you look at the positives. Assuming colleges are still asking for essays when applying and not just focusing on gender and skin color.

My kids are Jasian… 🤦🏻‍♂️. No DEI value for some strange reason?

Good Luck with your move.....hope you don't have to travel into Philly.....if you do, try to make it during daylight hours. [laugh]

I worked in Philly from 1992-2009. Remember driving in at midnight 12-31-1999 to possibly power down the Data Center if Y2K caused some type of City Wide Power Outage. Was listening to End of the World as we know it and Ride of the Valkyries on the way in.

Just don’t accidentally cross the bridge and end up in Camden. It’s NJ so everything is illegal. It’s Camden so you can easily get shot.
I have been to Camden a few times… to visit the Aquarium, and once to interview for a job at Campbell Soup.

If my kid was the caliber to be able to handle and garner admission to Boston Latin, I’d find a way to leave her there until she graduates. Even though woke nonsense has diminished the quality of all k-16 education, Latin is still an amazing place. Moving your daughter out of there should be a last resort.

Congrats on getting out. PA overall is much better than MA. I've been to Philly a bunch. Had to run down there on occasion for work. It's not the safest place in the world, but it has it interesting parts and history. Overall, I'd go back for a visit.

Plenty of very nice burbs around Philly. Much like Boston, get outside of the city and some expensive towns with old money.

Sucks to move a highschool kid though. Hopefully, they are outgoing and can get involved in activities quickly. Can she stay enrolled there? Maybe find an apartment to rent/share for her to finish up? I guess that depends on how many years left.

Penn is a very good school. I hear Philly is a typical, Democrat hole.
When I visited, the Penn campus was lovely. But literally right across the street was a slum. It was really bad.

Edited to add: We visited Brown on the same college tour whirlwind. The neighborhood around Brown in Providence didn’t look great either, but it wasn’t as bad as Philly. I don’t know what Philly is like now as I haven’t been back there in decades.

I was dancing (or trying) on a table at the Hard Rock in Montreal with 2 lipstick lesbians at Midnight on 12-31-99 and everyone ran to the windows as hundreds were outside running in the streets with zero clothes on or just top less while police in all black riot gear were trying to control things….. it was a great night.

Knew a priest who raped boys at Boston Latin. Edmund Fitzgerald… yeah like the boat. I was “good friends” with him. He admitted it all to me. Wasn’t even sorry said the kids were “ready to go”. I thought about ~redacted~ him right there with a blunt object, I just walked out of his apartment and never spoke to him again. He died alone in 2020. Good luck in Philly.

Boston Latin is a public school, not a religious school. The Catholic Church has nothing to do with it. It's like Stuyvesant or Bronx Science in NYC.
