I'm thinking about putting a rail on my 10/22 to mount a scope to. Is this a good idea? What do you use?

Does either the Piccatiny style rail or the Weaver Rail have any advantages over the other?

All comments appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

The grooves on a Picatnny rail are wider than the grooves on a Weaver mount.

Meaning... Picatinny won’t fit Weaver, but Weaver will fit Picatinny.

Other than that, there's no one advantage over the other.

Thank you for that info LN

Does anyone else have an opinion on whether one is better than the other?
As I said, it will be mounted on a 10/22 for a scope.

Does anyone have an opinion to forget about a rail and just put a dedicated scope mount on it instead?

Direct scope mounts are usually a tad lower which makes the parallax error less, but for the most part it isn't a huge deal. Just look at ARs with scopes mounted up on the carry handle. Get the rail if you might want to swap out optics.

Based on that alone, and Picatinny and Weaver being the options you're considering, why not just go with the Picatinny to cover your bases? What type of optic are you looking to put on the 10/22?

WHOA! Member, that Picatinny stuff is more "tactical" so therefore it'll automatically make whatever it's on a rootin' tootin' bad butt tactical machine out of hoever has it. ;)

the 1913s are the best choice because the grooves are uniform in size across all the different firearms and accessories.

Picatinny = New Standard
Weaver = Old Standard

Basically, any new rings, mounts, or accessories are now coming out in Picatinny, and possibly in Weaver or with Weaver adapters. So why not go with the new standard, just as the previous poster said, where all your accessories will be easily interchangeable between all your modern firearms... Such as going from rifle to rifle or from rifle to handgun (such as lights and mounts, lasers). Picatinny will basically save you money by being standard.
