“At the Nation’s Gun Show in Chantilly, spirits seemed high. People wandered from booth to booth, and the scent of popcorn filled the air. It could have been mistaken for a state fair or weekend flea market were it not for the rows of weapons and accessories — gun parts, AR build kits and body armor — laid out on every surface. It was easy to overlook the one common emotion underlying the event: fear.

Here were weekend shoppers intently inspecting tools of death: moms testing the heft of handguns and fathers stocking up on ammo. When I asked attendees and sellers what gun ownership meant to them, most replied with the same word: “protection.”

… Perhaps the most troubling aspect of gun ownership for “protection” is the sharp-edged individualism it implies: an every-man-for-himself mind-set. Institutions can’t be trusted, police will be unresponsive, and the government might one day turn on you.”

This is where the liberals make their biggest mistake - thinking being prepared is driven by fear. That self-reliance for “protection” is a sign of delusion. That the notion of individualism in a governed state is a fantasy.

The author, an Opinion columnist and Editor for WaPo, appears to see the world through her own lens of progressive socialism, where Big Brother will take care of all, if only the Proles can be kept in line and kept working. I expect she’s not a fan of our Founders, nor their wisdom:

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” attributed to Ben Franklin

Top comments/replies focus on NRA and FOX News - love them or hate them, they are what the left blames.

“…As an old white man who has hunted and owned hunting weapons for 55 years, I will tell you that IMO the cause of this epidemic is rooted in the NRA. Originally an organization designed to promote hunter safety and education, it devolved into a conspiracy with arms manufacturers to promote gun sales through propaganda. May Charleton Heston and Wayne LaPierre burn in Hell.”

” It's also the 24/7 loop of people of color committing crimes on FOX, Newsmax and OAN, as well as the "invasion" from the border. They're trying to convince white folks that criminals are rampant, and that governments are doing nothing to stop them coming for you.”

Operator: "911, what's your emergency?"
Victim: "Yes, I am being held up at gun point by a fellow demanding I withdraw money from the ATM ... what's that? ... Oh yes, he also wants me to drive him to my home so he can do nasty things to some family members while forcing me to watch. His plans after were not very specific."
Operator: "Did you try peeing yourself?"
Victim: "Yes, but he was undeterred."
Operator: "It will be 35-40 minutes for an officer to arrive, can you stay there a bit longer?"
Victim: "Probably not, this guy is getting a little impatient."
Perp: "Can we hurry this up please?"
Victim: "CAN'T YOU SEE I'M TALKING ON THE PHONE!?!"

They assume that if they get in trouble that 1) they will be able to call 911 and that 2) 911 will arrive in time. Neither assumption is correct. Most of us will never be put in such a situation but we realize it can happen to anyone even in “safe” places.
That logic flew for the first 3-6 guns for me

I mean i still believe in what you are saying

But after 30+ guns lol... if i go through what would be around 600 rounds of 9mm..22 wmr..556...6.8spc...22 lr.. and 300 win mag

Without reloading chances are godzilla came up from the depths

No i like owning and shooting guns and tinkering with them

Protection is a reason too just not the main one

These are not "fears."
They are "realities."
And they are an outstanding reason to arm oneself, rationally.
"Individual fear becomes a greater priority than collective safety."

an official hypocrisy will claim that the safest place in the well governed society is the prison, so, everyone should be living under the incarceration rules, in order to ensure that important 'collective safety'.

nevertheless, it is impressive, how consistent all the activists are in that consolidated attack on concepts of any individual rights, and all in the name of the 'collective' something.

Nothing quite like a Sunday afternoon puttering around in a well stocked gun and loading room….

I would like to take every one of these shit stains to a horrible crime scene grab them by the back of the neck and make them look.
Some poor gal who just got raped and brutally murdered by some d-bag with a rap sheet as long as your arm.
Make them look and force them to describe what that person's last minutes last minutes of life must have been like , the fear the pain, the wondering why no one was there to help them.

This is what happens to people who don't have the means to defend themselves from people who scumbags like you work so hard to keep on the streets.
See if you can get this out of your head the next time you feel the urge to run your suck hole.

They fear gun ownership. Why is the RKBA so scary to them?

I call BS that people at a gun show simply cited protection. Anyone with a clue about the 2A and history includes it among the reasons. And, calling protection fear is like saying people buy insurance because they fear a house fire.

I have guns because I'm contrarian.

They say I shouldn't have them.

Ergo, I do
There is nothing more of a dead giveaway that you need to keep your guns to protect yourself from your government, than your government telling you that you need to turn your guns in.

I'm not a contrarian, I just recognize when tyranny is all around me, in the government, in the media, in half the general population's attitudes, and I'm going to take every step necessary to protect my rights and the enjoyment of them.

"Listen, if the Supreme Court eventually says that states or the Congress can't pass universal background checks or can't take these weapons off the streets, I think there's going to be a popular revolt over that policy," he continued. "A court that's already pretty illegitimate is going to be in full crisis mode." - Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT)

That's why I have firearms - protection against Democrats, liberals and criminals.

So here we go again, Leftists threatening the live of Justices because they're not hateful Leftists.
Poor Chris, he doesn't understand that the "revolt" he's hoping for will end up with him swinging from the end a rope.

12:34pm post - there’s my coincidence again but you’re using it.

Did someone say Leftists are revolting? I agree!

Because it's very hard to impose your will by force on people that can shoot you in the face.
Try herding a well armed group onto the cattle cars.
