Saturday, I went to the Halifax Walmart. Same as usual, a few rifles and shot guns, lotsa ammo.

Today I went to the new super Walmart in Plymouth. Some ( a little) ammo and NO guns except paint ball. Very small sporting goods section. I asked the girl why no guns, she didn't know. I asked if it was political correctness at work and she thought it was.

Went next door to Dick's. Never been in a Dick's before anywhere. Quite a few rifles and shotties maybe 40-50 total. No handguns. Very little handgun ammo. Quite a bit of shot shells. Ammo pricing ON SALE was more than Walmart's regular pricing.

Haven't been to the Taunton/Raynham store lately but last time I was there they had lots of everything including black powder.

Looks like I continue to support my local gun seller.

Ya I mentioned that about the Plymouth Walmart when they moved from North Plymouth. They had a few rifles and shotguns and in a couple weeks, they were all gone. The Sports Authority in Plymouth packed up all their rifles, shotguns and ammo and shipped it all away.

No handguns at Dick's...that would be too controversial, and you are correct their ammo is more expensive. Now since Wal-mart appears to be getting out of the gun business (I remember when they sold handguns, too, but that went away after Columbine, now rifles and shotguns are apparently on the agenda) I wonder when they will drop ammo from their stores ?

Regards,

Mark

I'm going to have to go to Walmart. I buy my shotshells from Dicks because when it's on-sale it's about 2 bucks a box when you buy the case.

But if Walmart has Shells for under two dollars for a case, I'm going to have to start going there instead. Hell, it's right next to Walmart in North Attleboro.

I didn't check out the shotgun ammo prices in either place, so I don't know how they compare.

I like guns with grooves in the barrels !

No, Dicks isnt a bargin for ammo. Sometimes a good sale on long guns, but not on ammo.
No, Plymouth Walmart doesnt stock anything! Maybe one box of WWB in 40 is all I could ever find there. I gave up when I asked a girl to get me a few boxes of whatever, she said OK, was intirupted by someone that wanted a hunting license, and just started filling his crap out....
I no longer live that way as I've moved back to Swansea, and the only Walmarts I go to are in RI (Both in warwick), they stock a LOT of ammo, and if I ask the lady to make sure she has X ammount of boxes for the weekend, she'll order them and hold them for me!
I dont think I'll ever purchase a firearm from anyone other than FSGuns, I just cant see spending 33% more for the same ammo. I COMPLETELY understand he doesnt get the same wholsale price, and he's probably making the same profit per sale, I shoot a LOT and that 33% adds up... :)

I do too, but in SASS, you have the shotgun in every stage. So I go thought a lot of shells, more so when you're shareing with someone that needs them. New guys, and people that just used more than they thought, or if I bring someone to try it out.

I don't konw how much ammo is because I pretty much reload everything that I shoot. SO the only time that I buy ammo is when I need more brass. And half the time I buy that off e-bay, or Len. [shock]

But you can't get much cheaper than that. I fugured out that if I buy .45 it cost me about 27 cents a bang. If I load it, it costs me about 7 cents a bang. You can't get much cheaper than that.

C-pher,

I guess you missed my numerous posts previously about the Wal-Mart in Attleboro? [wink]

They can't sell ammo (or guns) there. Allegedly they lost their state license for some infractions (clerk at Dick's told me this). At any rate, I've been in there a few times, saw the ammo in the case, along with the sign (no ammo/gun sales) and asked a clerk once and an asst. mgr another time. Same old story . . . we filed our paperwork and are waiting (the two trips were ~6 months apart).

Clerk in Dick's told me that a female MA State Trooper bought ammo there while in uniform, no LTC/FID. Subsequently they got nailed for selling ammo to someone without a LTC/FID. Don't know if it was a "sting" or not, but the badge only entitles a LEO to carry/possess a gun/ammo without the LTC, it does NOT entitle a LEO to purchase anything without the proper license.

So, you can try, but I doubt that they got their license reinstated, unless the chief felt benevolent and that they had learned their lesson. My experience in the Walpole store tells me that they do NOT properly train their help and thus they are clueless about MGLs regarding the sales of guns/ammo. This was also true in some K-Marts back in the day when they were selling these evil products.

Sorry, you know, I didn know that. And I wouldn't have remembered that you told me that until I walked in there and realized that I couldn't buy shells.

SO, I think that's why I haven't really checked at my Wally World. But I do have the Walpole store that's not too far down the road. So I can always check there.

I've never looked on-line at Walmart.com to see if they list ammo. I do know that they have rifles on-line, but I've never looked at ammo.

And in this case I guess the lesson would be to never trust anything a police officer says or does to be in your best interest. Like it or not, that's the obvious lesson they're teaching, which unfortunately is a far cry from when I was growing up.

Ken, although I agree with your premise, in this case someone allowed the uniform to either intimidate them to do something they shouldn't have or gave them a false sense that the law totally doesn't apply to LE.

In the Nuclear Navy, Adm. Rickover and his staff used to try to intimidate sailors into failing to do their job properly because of scrambled eggs/brass on their collar. His lesson was that doing your job right was necessary to save the boat (submarines) and all hands on deck and thus nothing should ever get in your way of "doing the right thing". Rank shouldn't intimidate folks.

A neighbor/friend told me about one such test run where a LtCdr stood in his way to get to his post to do his job. After requesting the officer to move politely twice, the E5 shoved him out of the way. He passed the test!

The law requires everyone in MA to show a MA LTC/FID for ammo, no exceptions. If a store sells to a badge without a LTC/FID, they are in violation of state law, plain and simple. No sympathy.

Remember my prior post where a clerk at the Wal-Mart in Walpole argued with me that an "FID and LTC are the same thing to me" when he demanded my FID for .45ACP ammo (after I told him it was for a pistol course) and got snappy when I told him that I did not have an FID but had a LTC as I proceeded to remove it from my wallet. He's setting himself up for the same fate if he knowingly sells pistol ammo to an FID holder. [BTW, for Craig's friend . . . no this wasn't Craig but it was a clerk that Craig called over to wait on me and he did hear at least part of this conversation. If Craig is really a shooter, he should know better than this and educate his staff.]

Walmart SUCKS! I just came from there. The one in Epping NH. I needed some CCI standard .22 ammo for the smallbore league and figured it's quite a bit closer than Rileys. Well all they had was a few boxes of Remington and Federal cheap stuff.
Everytime I go into Walmart (which isnt often) I hate the place more and more. I'd rather pay a few cents more and give my money to the locals.

Everybody wonders why all the small gun shops are going out of business. It's because people go to the big department stores to save a few bucks (sometimes only cents!) on a gun or ammo. Little guy goes under because no business. Next thing you know, big department store decides it's not worth the hassle selling guns & ammo, so they stop doing it. Now where do you go??
I've been preaching this for years. Looks like it's coming true down in Mass..
Go to Wallmart if you need big plastic storage bins or a throw-away Chinese radio. If you need anything firearm related, go to a gun shop.

No. Attleboro WalMart

Yes, the dept. manager at WalMart in No. Attleboro told me the same story about the female trooper buying ammo. And, no, they will not be selling ammo again anytime soon. The Mgr's word was "never."

But, WalMart in Bellingham still stocks and sells ammo. Not a lot of selection, but for what they have (Win white box) they are still pretty cheap. Of course, they never carry any defense (HP) ammo. Lately I buy at least 500 rds at a time, and they have even gone out back to get me more boxes. Very friendly and they always check my LTC. Even their register tells them to check my LTC, not sure why the No.Attleboro deal could have happened. (ok, I do know why.... the clerk was stupid.)

Also, I did buy from Dick's in No. Attleboro last week. They had Rem 9mm 115gr FMJ for only $6.00 per 50, during a 2 day sale. Not bad.

And, to be clear, I am not "just saving a few cents." My 40S&W is only $15.96 per 100 at Wally world, and at my two favorite shops (and popular on this forum) they are getting either 19.99 or 23.00. So for my avg 800 rds per month, I save $384-672 per year. Gee, sounds like my "few cents" equals an extra gun or two every year.

BTW, for the record, I do support my local gun shops quite well. So far, in the past 6 months, I have spent almost $7K total at the 3 best shops. So, I do agree with supporting the good shops as much as we can. And when they can offer me a good case price, I would buy from them and have more lately. And I am rating shops on knowledge and advice as much as I am pricing. I treat my scuba shop the same way. When they help me with good advice, easy returns, etc., I will go back to them over and over again.

And if an overpriced shop with unhelpful staff goes under, I may not even notice it. sorry.

Prices, please!

When saying that Dick's is expensive even on sale, what would 9mm/380 auto box of 50 (remington) cost in the best local store (and which store is it)? The cheapest 9mm I can buy in the best store around would be 130 bucks plus tax (if I buy 1000 rounds). On the other hand, at 5.95 a box of 50, with an additional $10 discount is about $110 per 1000. The 380 auto cost about $8 a box, so that is at least 2-3 bucks cheaper than anywhere else (if you find any 380 auto ammo at all). Walmart sells 380 auto for 10 bucks a box (same box as in Dick's) and it is never on sale. So in fact, with the sale (and a $10 bucks discount which is available if you ask the right questions), Dick's prices can not be beaten, period.

OK... So what are the right questions?

I have not found Dick's to be cheap at all!

Four Seasons can beat them on ammo on a "bad day"!

I went into Dick's in Attleboro, asked about 1K .45ACP and the manager very nicely told me that they couldn't discount case lots anymore . . . orders from "on high". He admitted that they used to discount case lots, club purchases, LEO purchases, etc. until corporate put a stop to it.

Wal-Mart is ALWAYS cheaper than Dick's on the ammo that I've looked at (pistol - .45, 9mm, .40).

Although I can't find it right now, Four Season's has had a price matching statement on their website . . . if possible they will meet/beat any prices from retail stores in MA (or New England . . . I can't recall which). Ask them what they can do if you are buying quantity.

I always give Carl a shot at giving him the business, as long as I'm able to get up there to get what I need (it's ~90 miles RT). There are times I pick stuff up at Wal-Mart, since I don't have the time to make the long trip to Woburn. As for other shops in my area, there are very few, most of which have "non-standard" hours that I've been unable to connect with, or one shop that is small and doesn't seem to stock a lot of ammo.

Went to Walmart to get a better rifle for hunting this season... I can say.. I left somthing there.. but didn't leave with anything sadly.. there manager was to scared to even come to the sporting goods section.. what a total fracking waste of time.. all Walmart is good for is ammo etc.. but don't bother buying firearms from em.

The Walmart in Norwich, CT that is..

So I said hell with buying a cheap gun for a quick and easy get to go for some hunting while my dad has vacation from work. I was hunting with a 30-30 lever action this morning I led.. a stand still doe about maybe half a foot.. my dad says the gun was shooting to the left alittle.. fracking shot it in the right cheek of its ass.. then the bastard runs in to a middle of a swamp.. if it wasn't the size of a football field.. I would have went diving! [lol]

Ended up buying a S.Arms 243..

Which cost me like 150ish big ones more.. but + the scope.. so not so bad.. would perfer a better quailty scope.. but its ok for a starting season, the next day hunt(s).

Hunting White Tails.

Blaze,
First welcome to the forum.. Second I recently got the Savage 110 in .308. It's a great firearm and VERY accurate. I just had to sight it in a little.

Please don't tell us you let the deer die a slow, agonizing death in the swamp, or worse, get infected and die an even slower death. Please finish the story on how you finished your job and the hunt. Please?
