Vietnam War memorial tagged with graffiti in Boston; American flags thrown in creek

BOSTON (WHDH/CNN/Gray News) – Just days before Memorial Day, Boston police are trying to figure out who would vandalize a memorial dedicated to Vietnam veterans – and why.

Police said the vandalism happened at the Vietnam War Memorial in the Dorchester neighborhood on Thursday. They’re calling it “hate-related.”

The vandal or vandals drew a swastika and wrote hateful messages on monuments, ripped plants from the ground and threw American flags in a nearby creek.

Surveillance video may show a suspect wanted in connection with the vandalism, the Boston Herald reports.

The newspaper also reports the damage was done one day after repairs were completed following vandalism to the memorial in October.

it took them from October to May to fix it after the last vandalism?? Did they rebuild it from scratch or something, wtf??

Wow, random messaging, though you can be sure we got the message that whoever did it is/are real ***hole(s).

there was some serious damage done back in october. and yes it took a lot of time and cash to restore. this time it was graffiti and shrubs ripped out.

tip of the cap to all the volunteers who helped fix this on memorial day weekend

This reeks of a liberal trying to stir up some shit.
You may be on to something. I remember a case where a rabbi vandalized his own synagogue late one night with spray-painted swastikas and anti-Jewish slurs. He did not realize that the business across the street had 24/7 surveillance cameras. He was arrested and his career as a rabbi was finished.

Suspect who vandalized Dorchester Vietnam memorial identified, taken into custody

State police and UMass Boston police identified the suspect who vandalized the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Dorchester.

A 33-year-old Dorchester man was taken into custody without incident Saturday morning and was subsequently interviewed by police.

After questioning, police said the man was sent to a Boston hospital for mental health evaluation and treatment. His name is not being released at this time.

If the suspect is released from the hospital over the weekend, he will be returned to police custody and charged with malicious destruction of property and tagging.

If he is hospitalized for further treatment, he will be summonsed to Dorchester District Court on those charges at a later date.

According to police, the man also has a prior default warrant out of Dorchester District Court for a previous larceny of an American flag and a Massachusetts state flag from the UMass Boston campus. The warrant stems from a separate, past incident.
