The University of Utah, based in Salt Lake City, had prohibited firearms on its campus until that ban was struck down by the state's Supreme Court in late 2006. The institution, backed by all other universities in the state, is still fighting through federal courts to reinstate the ban.

But state legislators could be moving in the opposite direction, considering a bill to modify current law to allow people in Utah -- including students -- to carry loaded weapons openly.

Utah State Representative Curtis Oda said the bill, which he is sponsoring, is merely to clarify that people with weapons permits may carry a gun openly or -- with a concealed permit -- they may hide it for the sake of surprise.

He stressed that people with permits have gone through rigorous checks.

"When you see someone with a gun, you are looking at some of the most law-abiding people in the state," he said.

This is awesome to see students and faculty exercising their second amendment rights, and carrying to protect their lives against all threats on campus.

Just as the first conceal carry laws were met with skepticism that cities would turn into the wild west, where are those people to speak out now against the State of Utah? Since 2006, Utah has allowed conceal carry in their Colleges: Where are all of the "irresponsible" young adults causing mass shootouts that the antis predicted? [rolleyes]

It would be nice to see a trend start across the country, as more responsible citizens in Utah carry on campus. One can only hope...

In reading some of the blogs, the common theme of the antis are:

"All conceal carry individuals are unstable":
Totally agree about how insane this really is. We're not living in the wild west anymore. This is the 21st century. Very bad things can and will happen. All it takes is one person to go postal as we've already seen. Imagine if just 25% of a 100 student class was packin' heat. That's 25 people potentially shooting off 15 rounds each. Do the math. That's 375 bullets flying in a closed environment. And don't think for a second that Utah is immune from such violence. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

"Emotional responses cause shootings": Also, they use many situations that explain what WE have been saying all along in that the BG targets innocent people first! In the situation this person brought up, the BG targeted and engaged the armed Police officers FIRST before attacking the sheepole:
As a university professor I am terrified of this idea. I have had students get emotional about their grades. Regardless of their responsibility for achieving a low score, 10 percent blame me. With the current set up in Ohio I know that if I see a student with a gun it is 100 percent a bad thing and I can act accordingly. With students commonly carrying it becomes a question of at what point should I be worried that something bad is about to happen. Why not just keep people undergoing psychiatric treatment from owning a gun?

As for the argument that an armed campus will prevent these killings, didn't a man just open fire at a city council meeting outside Saint Louis when the room was full of police officers? Why wasn't he intimidated by the very obvious large number of other weapons present?

The age old question of "Who is the Good guy vs. the Bad guy". Usually the incident would be over in 3 - 5 minutes, so that would be the usual response time anyways for any significant Police response: Thus, the first responders can call an ambulance or a coroner depending on the state of the BG!
Here is my concern. If a shooting incident starts happening on campus, and the concealed weapons holders start taking action, how will the police know who is the shooter and who is the good guy when they arrive to the chaotic scene?

The sad part in all of this is that there is a serious amount of disinformation concerning conceal carry permit holders vs. law abiding citizens vs. Gang Bangers. Unfortunately, the same campuses that want Victim Zones are responsible for polluting these minds. [thinking]

The last point is something that the armed citizen who elects to get involved should take heed of. By the time the PD arrives, that gun should be in the holster, preferable under cover, and one's empty hands in plain view.

Or that could be 375 rounds used to stop some glory seeking psycho[rolleyes]

I think that goes without saying...one would only hope. Once the threat is over and neutralized, the very first action should be to holster the sidearm.

but-but-but, people with guns are- bad!

I think that the problem with the anti(s) is that they tend to spend far too much time letting something besides their brain regulate their actions.

You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons. (Jim -- Blazing Saddles)

Always remember, there's 2 kinds of anti's.

Power seekers and sheeple.

The anti politicians and the big time anti's are power seekers. They want Socialism, and they know they can NOT get it in the US until the public is disarmed.

Yes, they are afraid of getting shot. And rightfully so.

The sheeple? Well, they need to move to somewhere they can be safe. Like DC or London. Definitely not Baghdad, there isn't enough people getting shot there to be safe.
